Symantec Secures Centre Community Hospital

Hospital Integrates Symantec Solutions Across All Tiers of Network

CUPERTINO, Calif. -- Feb. 11, 2003 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced that it is working with Centre Community Hospital (CCH) of State College, Pa., to secure its cyber infrastructure across all tiers of the hospital's network.

As part of a one-year agreement, CCH will deploy a combination of Symantec products and services throughout the hospital's 800-seat network to create the integrated approach to Internet security necessary to meet and defeat today's blended threats. Technology reseller Systems Design Group, Inc. of Lexington, Ky. is facilitating the deployment.

"Our partnership with Symantec for Internet security simplifies and centralizes the critical management duties for our IT staff, allowing CCH to focus on our primary mission of providing excellent patient care," said Ken Bixel, chief information officer and director of information services for CCH. "Symantec's support of our cyber security strategy gives us the confidence that our systems will retain their integrity and that our patients' personal information will not be co-opted or compromised."

Following a Systems Design Group security vulnerability assessment and implementation services from Symantec consultants, CCH is utilizing Symantec AntiVirus Enterprise Edition to protect the hospital's network from malicious code at the gateway, server and desktop level. Additionally, Symantec network and host intrusion detection systems continually scan the hospital's network for unauthorized access and inordinate activity. Lastly, Symantec ESM ensures compliance with the hospital's internal security policies pertaining to the network.

"Healthcare administrators are seeking powerful and manageable security technologies to improve patient care and to manage data," said Vincent Steckler, vice president, public sector, Symantec. "CCH demonstrated the most effective approach to enterprise security management by starting with a comprehensive vulnerability assessment and then deploying security measures as spelled out by that assessment."

Established in 1902, CCH is a fully accredited, non-profit hospital serving central Pennsylvania with a staff of 185 physicians representing more than 30 specialized fields. The facility participates in select joint research ventures with Penn State University, located in nearby University Park, Pa.
