CUPERTINO, Calif. - March 5, 2003 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced that Symantec AntiVirus has earned its 19th VB 100% award, as published in the February 2003 Virus Bulletin. The prestigious VB100% logo is awarded to products that detect in the wild viruses, as tracked by the WildList Organization, during both on-demand and on-access scanning.
"We are pleased that Symantec AntiVirus consistently earns high detection rates in independent testing from accurate, trustworthy sources such as Virus Bulletin," said Arthur Wong, vice president of Symantec Security Response. "We remain committed to providing enterprise and home customers with intelligent and effective security solutions that offer reliable protection against today’s malicious code."
Virus Bulletin provides its subscribers with impartial advice about anti-virus security and the available product, editors explained in the February 2003 issue. Editors also emphasized the importance of product continuity in selecting an effective antivirus solution: "As the virus threat is continually changing, you should look for products that have achieved a succession of VB 100% awards rather than just one or two." The product must also produce no false positives. According to Virus Bulletin, products that do not have a very high detection of these viruses are unlikely to be of widespread appeal.
Symantec AntiVirus is the world’s most trusted antivirus solution. It removes malicious code automatically, protects e-mail messages and Instant Messaging attachments, and keeps virus definitions up-to-date automatically. The inclusion of exclusive, heuristics-based Worm Blocking technology detects e-mail worms such as Nimda and Badtrans, stopping them before they spread through outgoing e-mail. Used together with Symantec’s automatic updating and response capabilities, and complemented by Symantec’s powerful Script Blocking technology that detects fast-moving script-based viruses, this technology helps provide proactive protection against known and unknown threats before new virus definitions are created.
Symantec AntiVirus is supported by Symantec Security Response, the world’s leading Internet security research and support organization. Symantec Security Response leverages sophisticated threat and early warning systems to help provide customers with comprehensive, global, 24x7 Internet security expertise to proactively guard against today’s complex threats.
