CUPERTINO, Calif. - March 6, 2003 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced that the 2003 versions of Norton AntiVirus, Norton SystemWorks, and Norton Internet Security have all been named top utilities in PC World's annual utilities guide. According to the special March 2003 20th anniversary issue of the magazine, editors selected Norton AntiVirus as the top antivirus utility, Norton SystemWorks' Norton Speed Disk as the preferred disk defragmenter, and Norton SystemWorks' Norton UnErase as the most effective file recovery utility. Editors also extended an honorable mention to Norton Internet Security for its powerful net protection and singled out Norton Utilities, a key component of Norton SystemWorks, as one of only three classic utilities to have passed the test of time.
"Effective, hassle-free utilities are critical for PC users who want to avoid the downtime and lost productivity that result from computer problems," said Steve Cullen, senior vice president, Consumer and Client Product Delivery at Symantec. "Symantec is pleased that after thoroughly evaluating a comprehensive range of products, PC World's reputable editors point to Symantec solutions as proven tools for trouble-free computing."
PC World editors commended Norton AntiVirus 2003 for its intuitive interface and consistent virus-catching capabilities, as well as its automatic virus and engine updates. Editors also praised Norton AntiVirus 2003's e-mail scanning capabilities, which now include the ability to scan instant message attachments. Norton AntiVirus 2003 is the world's most trusted antivirus solution and features exclusive heuristics-based worm blocking and script blocking technologies to provide proactive protection against known and unknown threats.
Editors pointed to Norton Speed Disk, a feature in Norton SystemWorks 2003, as the top tool for hard disk defragmentation. "As you use your computer, files tend to become fragmented and spread all over your hard drive. A disk defragmenter can make accessing files quicker by putting all the pieces back together," editors explained. "Rock-solid disk defragger Norton Speed Disk has been around for nearly as long as the personal computer, and it does the job without fuss." Editors also lauded its intuitive interface, flexibility, and usability.
Norton UnErase, also found in Norton SystemWorks 2003, got the nod as best file recovery utility. "When Back to the Future's Marty McFly screwed up, he just zoomed back to a time when he could fix things," editors noted. "If you're a PC user, you can turn to Norton's UnErase." According to editors, recovering deleted files with Norton UnErase is as easy as selecting the UnErase Wizard from the Recycle Bin, clicking the file name, then clicking the Recovery button. "That's it-the file reappears like magic in its previous location," they concluded.
PC World further highlighted Norton SystemWorks' Norton Utilities in a sidebar on time-tested, "classic" utilities. "Computers have changed immeasurably over the years, but people still rely on certain classic utilities, year in and year out," they wrote. "Beginning as a utility for testing your hard drive, Norton Utilities has kept pace with computer technology, providing a comprehensive set of tools for looking at the innards of your system."
In awarding an honorable mention to Norton Internet Security 2003 for its net protection capabilities, editors praised the product's features and configurability. "Norton Internet Security 2003 has a deep end: You can fuss with rules, communications settings, and more," they wrote. Norton Internet Security is the most tightly integrated and complete online security and privacy suite. It includes Symantec's best-of-breed firewall, intrusion detection, privacy control, antivirus, and content filtering technologies in a single, easy-to-use suite.
