CUPERTINO, Calif. - March 12, 2003 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced that Symantec has swept the Security Products category of the CRN Channel Champions program to earn three CRN Channel Champion awards for 2003. Channel partners awarded Symantec top marks in Security categories - firewall, intrusion detection and antivirus solutions-to recognize the company's outstanding channel focus, product line and technologies.
In last year's CRN Channel Champion program, Symantec firewall and antivirus solutions also took top honors as CRN Channel Champions. Symantec's intrusion detection offerings outscored competitors in the technical areas of price/performance, ease of management, profitability and return on investment.
"Symantec is honored to again be singled out by channel partners as their preferred security solutions vendor," said Allyson Seelinger, vice president, North American Channels at Symantec. "With the 2003 CRN Channel Champion awards, we reaffirm our commitment to providing our partners the solutions and support they need to protect their customers' systems and data while enhancing their business potential."
Symantec Firewalls Easy to Implement and Well Priced
"Symantec's superior ratings in price/performance and ease of implementation enabled it to edge out runner-up Cisco Systems in the firewall category," editors wrote. Symantec came in first or second in all areas of the survey; and pulled away from competitors in three technical areas: price/performance, ease of implementation and ease of management. Symantec also received top scores in three channel categories, including keeping solution providers informed of changes, return on investment and long-term channel strategy. Symantec outscored Cisco, Checkpoint, SonicWall and WatchGuard to win the category.
Symantec Ties for Top Honors in Intrusion Detection, Dominates Price/Performance
In the intrusion detection category Symantec tied for first place with Cisco. Symantec edged out the competition in four categories: ease of management, price/performance, vendor support over project life, and keeping solution providers informed of changes. CRN editors said, "Symantec's 81.3 rating in price/performance came in 2.9 points ahead of Cisco and Enterasys. That was the best relative showing of any vendor in the survey." Symantec's IDS solutions also scored highest with large solution providers.
Solution providers recognized Symantec's ManHunt solution for its gigabit speed and for using both protocol-anomaly detection and signatures to identify attacks. Andrew Brinkhorst, director of the IT security practice at AdviceX Technologies said, "Symantec took a giant step in the area of network-based IDS with the acquisition of ManHunt." He continued, "The product provides gigabit detection and balances Symantec's IDS offering, which were previously strongest in host-based IDS."
Symantec's AntiVirus Win Aided by Integrated Strategy
In the antivirus category Symantec AntiVirus and Norton AntiVirus dominated, earning top marks in all 11 technical and channel categories and scoring well with large and small solution providers. In the technical categories, which carried the most weight, Symantec's products edged out competitors by 5 points or more in all areas - product quality, ease of management, speed of product updates and price/performance. In the ease of management category, Symantec rated more than 15 points ahead of the competition. On the channel side, Symantec was particularly strong in the areas of return on investment, vendor support over the life of a project and keeping partners informed of changes.
Solution providers also recognized Symantec's strength in all areas of security. Steve Marchall, director of professional services at The Ergonomic Groups said, "If you're in the antivirus/security marketplace, you have to be looking at [Symantec] as a partner. Symantec has such a beautiful picture going forward to help consolidate security from a management point of view."
