M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Secures Network with Symantec Solutions

Nation's Top Cancer Research Center Deploys Policy Compliance Tool and Early Warning Services

CUPERTINO, Calif. - June 4, 2003 - Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced that the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center has selected Symantec to provide security solutions to help protect its cyber infrastructure. M.D. Anderson is deploying Symantec’s Enterprise Security Manager (ESM) on its servers to manage and monitor the hospital’s internal security system from a centralized security operating location. M.D. Anderson’s use of ESM complements its use of Symantec’s DeepSight Alert Services and DeepSight Threat Management System.

The Houston-based medical center is a world-renowned institution for cancer research and treatment, and has been continuously ranked as one of the top two cancer research institutes in the United States. The 900 faculty members of the University of Texas hospital system treat more than 65,000 patients a year and devote their efforts exclusively to cancer patient care, research, education, and prevention.

"The challenges of securing a complex information technology infrastructure in a health care environment are enormous," said Lew Wagner, Chief Information Security Officer, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. "Not only do we have to consider securing the center's computer infrastructure, but we need to keep in mind the security of logical links to other hospitals and other University of Texas components. As a result, we're talking about securing a number of different geographic locations all at the same time. Symantec's Enterprise Security Manager, along with DeepSight Alert Services and Threat Management System, creates a solution that is flexible enough and has the scalability for us to meet that complex challenge."

"M.D. Anderson's security needs for its computer network requires the integrated approach that all enterprises need to meet today's blended threats," said Gail Hamilton, Symantec executive vice president of Product Delivery and Response. "In particular, Symantec's Enterprise Security Manager simplifies the process for securing the hospital's network and allow its IT managers to swiftly assess any threats that may appear and devise the necessary steps to meet those threats."

An industry-leading security compliance solution, Symantec ESM allows IT administrators and IT security officers to effortlessly create, manage, and install customized security policies across local and international networks, while simultaneously scrutinizing those systems for potential security breaches. Monitored via its central console and easy-to-use, intuitive graphical user interface, ESM performs more than 2,000 different security and vulnerability checks on the largest variety of operating system platforms, including Window NT/2000/XP, Solaris, HP-UX, AIX, Red Hat Linux and various other UNIX systems, Novell NetWare, OpenVMS, and IBM iSeries (AS/400).

Symantec DeepSight Alert Services delivers personalized vulnerability and malicious code alerts, providing actionable information to help users mitigate vulnerabilities before they can be exploited. Symantec DeepSight Threat Management System tracks global security threats, providing early warning of active attacks to help protect critical information assets.
