CUPERTINO, Calif. - Sept. 22, 2003 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced it has signed a two-year extension of its agreement with HP to ship Norton AntiVirus and Norton Personal Firewall with all HP Pavilion, HP Media Center, and Compaq Presario consumer desktop PCs in North America. Symantec's Norton AntiVirus is the world's most trusted antivirus solution. Norton Personal Firewall is a comprehensive Internet security solution that keeps hackers out and personal data in. HP is one of the largest manufacturers of consumer desktop PCs in the world, according to a recent IDC report.
"With the rapid convergence of blended threats such as Blaster, Welchia, and SoBig compromising the integrity and stability of millions of computers around the world, multi-level protection has never been more critical," said Matthew Moynahan, vice president of Product Management, Client and Host Security Division, at Symantec. "Together, Norton AntiVirus and Norton Personal Firewall form a formidable defense against these blended threats to help make safe computing a reality for HP and Compaq users."
"It is important that our customers are protected from Internet threats the moment they power up their new desktops," said John Romano, senior vice president, HP's consumer PC organization. "To that end, HP continues to select Symantec solutions as the security software of choice to help consumers and small businesses defend their systems and data from viruses, worms, hackers, and more."
Norton AntiVirus provides HP and Compaq PC users with a complimentary 60-day subscription to protection updates for automatic, up-to-date protection against viruses, worms, and other malicious code at their potential entry points. Norton AntiVirus scans and cleans files, instant message attachments as well as email messages, and removes viruses automatically without interrupting the user. New built-in features even detect non-virus threats such as spyware and keystroke logging programs that can steal personal information and leave your computer more vulnerable. Norton AntiVirus includes automatic LiveUpdate, which checks for virus protection updates whenever the user is online and unobtrusively downloads them in the background.
Norton Personal Firewall provides HP and Compaq PC users with a complimentary 60-day subscription to protection updates for a complete firewall, intrusion detection system, privacy protection and program control. Norton Personal Firewall provides a barrier between Internet threats and the online HP and Compaq computer user, offering the most sophisticated technologies available to hide their computers from hackers and protect them against Internet threats-without sacrificing usability. Intrusion detection technology identifies new, emerging attacks while privacy protection technology prevents data from being sent to unsecured Web sites and blocks confidential information being sent through email, instant messages, or Microsoft Office attachments.
