CUPERTINO, Calif. - Dec. 2, 2003 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced that it has been placed in the Leaders Quadrant of the most recent Gartner North American Managed Security Services Provider (MSSP) Magic Quadrant Report. Published November 21, 2003, the report analyzes the MSSP marketplace during the first half of 2003 and evaluates providers on their completeness of vision and ability to execute in the North American Managed Security Services market.
"Symantec is proud to be listed in the leaders quadrant in Gartner's prestigious Magic Quadrant Report for the third consecutive semi-annual period," said Grant Geyer, vice president of Global Managed Security Services at Symantec. "We believe this underscores our market strength and continued leadership in helping companies manage their security."
To achieve Magic Quadrant recognition, Symantec was evaluated by Gartner in the following areas:
According to the report, the managed security services sector continued to show steady growth during the first half of 2003. Three primary factors impelled this growth, analysts reported. First, large enterprises continued to restrict head count growth and pushed to outsource IT functions such as security that weren't considered core competencies. Second, IDS purchases drove outsourcing decisions in many smaller enterprises. Third, the Slammer worm and other high-profile attacks drove enterprises to look for services support.
The report also stated that many buying decisions were driven by positive experiences with an MSSP's consulting services, and that this will continue to be a differentiator for successful MSSPs. Reporting and portal services as well as pricing also remain important considerations in procuring managed security services, the report added.
Earlier this year, Symantec Managed Security Services was also awarded 2003 Product of the Year by CMP Media's Network Magazine. The award recognizes the outstanding technical achievement of products and services that are most significant to the network IT community.
