San Francisco (RSA Conference) & Cannes, France (3GSM Congress) – Feb. 23, 2004 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced a collaboration with Nokia to develop a secure client for Nokia business devices, beginning with the Nokia 9500 Communicator platform. Symantec plans to offer integrated client solutions for Internet security including antivirus software, firewall technology, updating services and centralized over-the-air management for Nokia’s mobile devices. Symantec’s key security technologies will provide an added layer of critical defense to the Nokia devices, enabling customers to operate enterprise class mobile solutions with the security needed to protect against today’s Internet security threats.
“Many customers have clearly stated that security is a key requirement to the widespread adoption and deployment of mobile computing solutions,” said John Schwarz, president and chief operating officer at Symantec. “With the proliferation of wireless computing by business professionals, enterprises are looking to adopt mobile platforms that comply with their security policies at all entry points to the network. Symantec is the leading company that offers market-tested integrated Internet security solutions for mobile platforms and is proud to be working with Nokia, the world leader in secure business mobility, to add this capability to the new Nokia business devices.”
“Nokia is working with leading companies that provide top-of-the-line solutions to complement our enterprise mobility offerings. We are pleased to be working with Symantec to provide firewall, antivirus protection and update functionality to our portfolio of enterprise grade devices,” said Mary McDowell, senior vice president and general manager, Enterprise Solutions at Nokia. “The Symantec security client for the Nokia 9500 Communicator will provide additional peace of mind to enterprises looking to protect themselves against malicious activity and increase productivity through extended mobility.”
According to IDC, the converged mobile market is expected to increase by more than 800 percent in worldwide shipments through 2007. IDC has also found that security remains a primary concern of IT managers when considering adopting mobile technology in the enterprise.
“The growing demand for untethered devices continues to drive enterprise adoption of converged mobile devices,” said Sally Hudson, research manager, Mobile Security Software, at IDC. “Security solutions for these mobile environments, such as antivirus and a personal firewall, are essential as they provide corporations with a critical layer of enterprise protection.”
Symantec and Nokia are collaborating to provide world-class Internet security solutions for Nokia’s business devices, enabling enterprises and business professionals to confidently transact in mobile environments. Symantec solutions for the Nokia devices will be developed to run on the Symbian operating system. Symantec plans to have its solution commercially available in concordance with volume availability of the Nokia 9500 Communicator platform. Prior to that, Symantec plans to demonstrate its security solution to interested enterprises and operators.
