CUPERTINO, Calif. - June 14, 2004 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the global leader in information security, and AREVA's T&D division, a leading provider of products, systems and services to the electric transmission and distribution industry, announced today the industry's first partnership to provide a comprehensive security solution that includes products, services and best practices for Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems in the electric power industry. This SCADA security solution has been designed to meet cyber security needs without adversely impacting performance and availability as cited by objective third party, Battelle's Pacific Northwest Division, who has tested and validated the solution.
AREVA will resell Symantec for Electric Power solutions to assist electric utilities' in their efforts to lockdown increasingly interconnected SCADA networks, ensure business continuity, achieve regulatory compliance, and avoid costly disruptions associated with information security breaches. The tested solution includes Symantec Manhunt intrusion detection system, Symantec Gateway Security, Symantec Client Security, and Symantec AntiVirus.
Symantec for Electric Power is a solution designed to address cyber security needs of Electric Power companies, which consists of Symantec products, services, and security best practices. It helps Electric Power companies address business-related security issues, as well as to comply with industry regulations and standards, such as NERC Cyber Security standard. The Symantec solution addresses cyber security needs for both corporate and SCADA networks.
"Interconnection between SCADA environments and corporate networks introduce specific security needs around protocols and applications used that are not addressed by majority of existing cyber security products," said Brent Broback, security marketing director for AREVA T&D Division. "We now have the ability to tailor a security solution for our customers. This joint solution by Areva and Symantec addresses customer needs for SCADA-related cyber security without affecting availability or performance, which is critical to this industry."
Symantec's most recent Internet Security Threat Report showed that the electric power industry is twice as likely to experience a severe attack as telecommunications, e-commerce, and manufacturing.
"The expectations of an entire nation to secure its utilities have fallen squarely onto the shoulders of electric power companies during the past several years," said Gary Sevounts, director of industry solutions for Symantec. "The challenge with introducing untested IT Security products into SCADA environment is that it can cause service interruptions, performance degradations, while still not addressing SCADA specific security needs. We believe this partnership will ease the mounting pressure by providing products, services and best practices for SCADA and corporate environments that have been tested and validated in SCADA environments."
With manufacturing facilities in over 40 countries and a sales network in over 100, AREVA offers customers technological solutions for nuclear power generation and electricity transmission and distribution.
