CUPERTINO, Calif. – Oct. 11, 2004 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the global leader in information security, today announced that CSO Magazine and Alta Associates, an information security recruitment firm, presented Linda McCarthy, executive security advisor for Symantec, with the 2004 Private Solutions Provider Woman of Influence award for information security.
McCarthy was recognized for her many contributions to the field of information security, including her influential role in creating Symantec Press and her work in mentoring information security professionals. Symantec Press stands as a resource for all information security professionals and is available to authors currently writing or thinking about authoring a security-related book. As the author of Intranet Security: Stories from the Trenches and IT Security: Risking the Corporation, McCarthy serves as a mentor and trusted advisor to aspiring authors through her management of Symantec Press.
Additionally, McCarthy spearheaded Symantec's involvement in MentorNet, a nonprofit organization working to further women's progress in scientific and technical fields through the use of dynamic, technology-supported e-mentoring programs. Founded in 1997, MentorNet provides highly motivated protégés from many of the world's top colleges and universities with positive, one-on-one, mentoring relationships with mentors from industry, government, and academia.
"Alta Associates and CSO Magazine were fortunate to have many amazing women nominated for the inaugural 'Women of Influence Award,'" said Joyce Brocaglia, founder of the Executive Women's Forum for Information Security. "We are proud to honor this year's winners for their overall professional accomplishments, their achievements in the security sector, and for raising the glass ceiling for professional women as a whole. We consider them to be true role models that set the bar for the network of excellence created by the Executive Women's Forum."
The Women of Influence Awards are a new component of Alta Associates' annual Executive Women's Forum (www.infosecuritywomen.com), an elite event for high-ranking female information security practitioners and experts. The Women of Influence Awards were given in the categories of Public Sector or Academia, Private Solutions Provider, and Corporate Practitioner. An esteemed panel of judges selected the winners based on their influence on the professional community; their ability to solve problems or overcome challenges; their commitment to the highest ethical standards; having a history of designing and implementing effective security solutions; and serving as a mentor to colleagues, students, and others.
