VERITAS Backup Exec Suite Sets Gold Standard; Provides Ubiquitous Data Protection for Small and Medium Size Businesses

New product suite offers continuous data protection, ultra fast disk-based recovery and simplified management
NEW YORK - January 18, 2005 - VERITAS Software Corporation (Nasdaq: VRTS) unveiled at a global news conference today Backup Exec™ 10.0 for Windows Servers software, offering simplified and centralized management for Windows backup servers through a single console, and accelerated disk-based data backups and restores to address the growing and agile needs of small and medium-size businesses. In addition, the company announced a new comprehensive and integrated Windows data protection product suite, the VERITAS Backup Exec 10.0 Suite that integrates with VERITAS Replication Exec™ 3.1 (formerly VERITAS Storage Replicator) and VERITAS Storage Exec™ 5.3 (formerly VERITAS StorageCentral) software to deliver unprecedented levels of continuous data protection across all central and remote locations including desktops and laptops, while controlling and maximizing Windows storage resources.
"Protecting growing volumes of business critical data is a key business requirement for all growing companies. As IT organizations progress through the continuum of a comprehensive and efficient data management strategy, rapid recovery of data is a key component of operational efficiency -- the number one need for small to medium-size businesses," states Mika Krammer, analyst, Gartner Research.
Today, companies of all sizes must comply with complex regulatory requirements and are tasked with doing so with the least impact to IT budgets. With the release of VERITAS Backup Exec 10.0 and the VERITAS Backup Exec Suite (Backup Exec 10.0, Replication Exec 3.1, Storage Exec 5.3) of integrated recovery and management products, companies can now seamlessly protect mission-critical data, expedite data recovery and maintain regulatory compliance through efficient, policy-based management capabilities, utilizing existing hardware and staff from a single point of administration.

Continuous Data Protection

As small and medium size businesses maintain agile IT resources, they are continually tasked with lowering the cost of IT while squeezing maximum value from existing IT infrastructure. The VERITAS Backup Exec Suite of software enables companies to seamlessly protect information exposed to the greatest risk -- in remote offices and on individual desktops and laptops. Replication of data further reduces cost and centralizes backups across an organization without disrupting normal server operations or requiring incremental investments in remote office administrators and hardware.

Fast Disk-Based Recovery

With the release of Backup Exec 10.0 for Windows Servers, VERITAS adds fast disk-based recovery capabilities. The Advanced Disk-based Backup Option enables customers to restore data in half the time of traditional methods. In a recent independent disk restore performance benchmark study performed by VeriTest, researchers found that VERITAS Backup Exec 10.0 was more than twice as fast as HP Data Protector 5.5 and Computer Associates ARCserve 11.1 when performing a full volume restore from disk. Key features of VERITAS Backup Exec 10.0 Advanced Disk-based Backup Option include:
  • Synthetic Backup: This new feature enhances restore times without the need to take a full backup by seamlessly melding together smaller incremental backups into a single synthetic full backup, expediting data restores and consuming minimal network bandwidth.
  • Off-Host Backup: This new feature enables zero impact data protection across storage area networks (SANs) by automatically shifting the backup of data snapshots to alternate storage systems.

Simple to Grow - Simple to Manage

With the continued exponential growth of data across growing companies, the VERITAS Backup Exec Suite of software scales effectively to meet today’s requirements as well as those of tomorrow. Efficiently managing data is becoming an increasingly important factor for IT organizations. VERITAS Backup Exec 10.0 and the Backup Exec Suite of software, provides administrators with tools to ease the IT growth process and cost-effectively manage data. Simplified management features include:
  • Backup Exec SmartLink Technology: VERITAS' new SmartLink technology delivers unprecedented integration of data protection and management. This integration enables users to immediately backup or archive data from Storage Exec reports using Backup Exec and view job status and alerts of Replication Exec in the Backup Exec console. These new centralized and integrated management capabilities provide IT staff with a single point of administration to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Central Administration Server Option: This advanced option offered with VERITAS Backup Exec 10.0 software allows administrators to manage and monitor multiple Backup Exec servers from a single console across their organizations, significantly lowering the cost of administration required for organizations with multiple Backup Exec servers.
"We have 1,250 lawyers in our firm who work collaboratively across all 32 of our offices. VERITAS Backup Exec 10.0 software provides centralized data protection across all of our offices to ensure that critical information -- regardless of location -- is protected and readily available to our staff so we can deliver the highest level of service to our clients," said Ralph Barber, CIO, Holland & Knight LLP, an international law firm based in Tampa Florida. "The central administration capabilities within Backup Exec also help to increase the efficiency of our IT staff by helping minimize time previously spent manually backing up data."

Meet Regulatory Requirements

VERITAS Storage Exec protects organizations from legal exposure by blocking inappropriate file types from being stored on corporate resources. It also enables administrators to reclaim premium disk space and reduce storage growth by ensuring that only business-appropriate files are being stored and backed up, streamlining regulatory compliance through easy access to stored data along the way. In addition, as small to medium-size organizations continue to grow and the need to meet more granular regulatory requirements increases, VERITAS Enterprise Vault™ provides a highly scalable and customizable approach to address retention and information lifecycle management requirements.
"The ability to efficiently and expeditiously comply with regulatory requirements is fast becoming a major driver for IT within small and medium-size businesses,” states Mika Krammer, analyst, Gartner Research.

VERITAS Backup Exec QuickStart Edition

For the first time, VERITAS is offering a single server version of Backup Exec software called the VERITAS Backup Exec QuickStart Edition. Backup Exec QuickStart is ideal for quick and easy backup of data on single servers (file/print server, web server), is simple to set up and manage and provides cost-effective features for first-time server and storage buyers with basic IT needs. Backup Exec QuickStart software will only be available from server and storage OEMs and customer upgrades to Backup Exec 10.0 including its full array of options will be available through the worldwide network of VERITAS channel partners.
"Sony is very pleased to have our tape drives certified for usage with VERITAS Backup Exec 10.0 and Backup Exec QuickStart Edition," said Alan Sund, general manager for Tape Storage Solutions in Sony Electronics' Component and Business Solutions Division. "This combination of products offers exceptional synergy to our common channel partners, and provides an excellent solution and value for our end users."

Expanded Platform Support - UNIX and Linux Agents

In addition to the existing remote agent that protects Microsoft Windows and Novell NetWare Servers, VERITAS Backup Exec 10.0 is now available with a high performance remote agent that supports Red Hat and SUSE Linux servers and Sun Solaris UNIX servers. Backup Exec remote agents help minimize network traffic and maximize performance to reduce backup times.
"Today we're setting the Gold Standard in Windows data protection for growing Windows-based businesses," said Jeremy Burton, executive vice president, data management group, VERITAS. "With the latest release of Backup Exec, as well as the Backup Exec Suite, we're delivering continuous data protection and ultra fast disk-based recovery through an integrated solution that is simple to grow - and simple to manage."
