Symantec Announces First Winners Of The "Do You pcAnywhere?" Web Contest

pcAnywhere Users Share Creative Ways to Implement Symantec's Leading Remote Control Solution

CUPERTINO, Calif. - Feb. 7, 2005 - Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC), the global leader in information security, today announced the December 2004 and January 2005 winners of the "Do You pcAnywhere?" Web contest. Launched in November 2004, the contest calls on pcAnywhere users to enter their unique use scenarios to win an Apple iPod mini and a copy of pcAnywhere 11.5, the latest version of Symantec's leading remote control solution.

During the first two months of the contest, Symantec recognized the following winners:

  • December 2004 Winner: As operations manager for Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics, a division of Penn State University in University Park, Pa., Kevin Henry uses pcAnywhere in a truly unique way. Penn State's Multi-Sport Facility features one of only seven hydraulically bankable indoor running tracks worldwide. pcAnywhere allows Henry and his team of trained hydraulic technicians as well as the track manufacturer in Italy to monitor the performance of the movable hydraulic track and to address any computer-related failures that may arise. "Granted, the track does not fail very often," said Henry. "But when it does, pcAnywhere saves the day."
  • January 2005 Winner: Randy Redekopp is manager of information systems at The Canapen Group based in Edmonton, Alberta. The Canapen Group provides property and asset management services for Canadian real estate acquired by the CN Railway Pension Fund. Redekopp oversees all technology-related functions for The Canapen Group and is involved in the hiring process. In addition to using pcAnywhere as a traditional remote control and remote management solution to quickly resolve help desk and server support problems, Redekopp came up with a unique idea: to use pcAnywhere to remotely monitor the progress of job applicants as they work through the company's computer-based interview test. As part of the interview process, candidates for data entry positions are provided with a printed report and asked to recreate it from scratch in a spreadsheet application. "By using pcAnywhere to monitor the progress of each candidate in real-time, the hiring team can gauge and discuss the candidate's efficiency and methods rather than simply evaluating the completed project," said Redekopp. "Candidates are told that their progress is being monitored, but not having the hiring team looking over their shoulders eliminates some of the unnecessary stress in an already stressful situation."
"pcAnywhere has a long history of helping mobile professionals, small businesses and large organizations solve problems remotely. Part of determining the feature set of a new product release involves talking to customers around the world to see how they use the product," said Erin Hintz, vice president of marketing, enterprise administration, Symantec Corporation. "This research often uncovers interesting use scenarios we would never have thought of. The "Do You pcAnywhere?" Web contest invites pcAnywhere users to share their unique use scenarios with us and the world."
