Symantec LiveState Recovery Manager To Provide Centralized, Policy-Based System And Data Protection For Enterprise Servers And Workstations

CUPERTINO, Calif. - March 8, 2005 - Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC), the global leader in information security, today announced Symantec LiveState Recovery Manager 3.0, a centralized, policy-based system and data protection management solution for enterprise data centers, distributed computing environments and remote locations. Symantec LiveState Recovery Manager enhances information availability by allowing IT administrators to automatically enable remote systems for rapid recovery, centrally monitor the backup status of remote systems and quickly resolve backup problems. Scheduled to be available in April, it also simplifies regulatory compliance by auto-discovering systems that are not backed up regularly, providing graphical views of backup status and consolidating audit history information.

Symantec LiveState Recovery Manager is a new solution that provides real-time monitoring and control for Symantec LiveState Recovery, Symantec's disk-based recovery solution for enterprise servers and workstations. Introduced in 2002, Symantec LiveState Recovery enables organizations to significantly reduce backup windows and rapidly perform complete bare metal restoration of critical systems. LiveState Recovery integrates easily into existing IT environments, complementing leading tape-based backup systems.

Symantec LiveState Recovery Manager is Symantec's first offering based on the LiveState architecture, a single unified platform for Symantec's server and client management solutions. The LiveState platform is designed to reduce complexity and make it easier for customers to deploy additional LiveState applications in the future, such as patch management, by leveraging a common console look-and-feel, management database and automated agent deployment infrastructure.

Symantec LiveState Recovery Manager allows IT administrators to:

• Monitor backup status for an entire network, including how many devices are enabled for recovery, how many have jobs scheduled, how many have missed scheduled jobs and how many are offline
• Use wizards to define backup policies for groups of servers or users with similar requirements and then deploy them through a drag-and-drop interface
• Quickly resolve problems via centralized access to detailed storage information about each computer, such as volume name, size, amount used, last backup, last backup location, file system type, and backup history and events
• Jump-start backups on remote systems when backup jobs are not successful
• Deploy and configure backup services on remote systems
• Leverage Symantec pcAnywhere to remotely restore files, folders, non-system volumes or perform a full system recovery with minimal non-technical interaction at the remote system
• Remotely verify backup integrity for all servers and workstations
• Launch the Network Appliance management console (if previously installed and configured) to configure archive space on NetApp filers
• Launch the Snap Server from Adaptec (if previously installed) to configure archive space on Snap Servers
• Use Symantec LiveUpdate, Symantec's widely-used distribution mechanism, to download and install maintenance updates for the LiveState Recovery Manager console
