Symantec Positioned in Leaders Quadrant in Enterprise Backup/Restore Magic Quadrant Report

CUPERTINO, Calif. - August 10, 2005 - Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC), today announced that it has been positioned in the "leaders" quadrant in the Gartner Enterprise Backup/Restore Magic Quadrant report, 2005i for the company's NetBackup™ software.

VERITAS NetBackup software, now from Symantec, allows organizations to rapidly recover data via a broad range of backup and snapshot technologies and centrally manage all aspects of backup and recovery operations to provide consistent data protection policies across the enterprise.

Symantec has recently been positioned in the leader quadrant in Gartner Magic Quadrant reports representing the following key markets: enterprise antivirusii , software distributioniii , email securityiv , email active-archivingv , application server managementvi , and enterprise backup and recovery.

The Gartner Magic Quadrant evaluates vendors in specific markets by assessing each company's technology, service, support, features, functionality and viability. Companies are positioned in the quadrant based on their completeness of vision and ability to execute on that vision. According to Gartner, "leaders" are performing well today, have a clear vision of market direction, and are actively building competencies to sustain their leadership position in the market. Vendors that appear in the Gartner Enterprise Backup/Restore Magic Quadrant have demonstrated the ability to scale and address the heterogeneous backup requirements of the Global 2000. These vendors continue to look for ways to capture more business in the small-to-medium-sized businesses (SMB) market, while also helping larger customers improve their recovery times through expanded use of disk-based technologies in both central and remote offices.

Symantec recently announced the upcoming version of NetBackup 6.0, redefining data recovery by enabling administrators to discover and catalog all of their organization's backup copies of data and rapidly restore those copies using advanced disk-based capabilities available today. NetBackup 6.0 will further redefine recovery by offering integrated bare metal restore of entire systems. While NetBackup has long provided the extensive platform support and features that very large enterprises require, NetBackup 6.0 will also offer management reporting and global management features through an integrated console that centralizes and graphically presents all monitoring, alerting, reporting and troubleshooting functionality.

"Symantec has successfully maintained its position as a market leader despite significant market consolidation and increasing complexity of customer needs," said Jeremy Burton, senior vice president, data management group, Symantec Corp. "With NetBackup 6.0, we will allow customers to recover everything, including data and systems while enabling them to centrally manage complex environments, giving them the confidence that their data is securely protected."
