Symantec Helps Aspirus, Inc. Ensure HIPAA Compliance

Symantec data security and management software tools help healthcare provider realize more than $2 million in savings

Cupertino, Calif. – June 3, 2009 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced Aspirus, Inc. has implemented Symantec backup and recovery, endpoint management and endpoint security software products to keep their systems up and running 24×7, support an increasingly mobile and decentralized workforce, and improve Aspirus’ information security posture. The combination of Symantec products and services helps Aspirus reduce costs while complying with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other laws and regulations requiring the security and availability of patient records.


A Wisconsin-based health care system, Aspirus Inc. has experienced significant growth in employees and technology, resulting in increased costs of securing and managing ever-growing data stores. In addition, Aspirus projected the amount of data it backs up in 2009 will be double that of just a few years ago, rising from about 9 terabytes in 2006 to nearly 20 terabytes by the end of 2009.


To address these challenges and to achieve a more secure and reliable infrastructure, the company leverages Symantec technologies. While the full upgrade to its systems took nearly four years, Aspirus realized a $2 million savings over its previous system through labor and management improvements:

  • Through streamlined data backups from January 2005 through December 2009, Symantec NetBackup will help the company save an estimated $200,000 in IT labor costs.
  • NetBackup will reduce the amount of time spent managing and troubleshooting backups from January 2005 through December 2009, saving an estimated $400,000.
  • Altiris Client Management Suite will net an estimated $18,000 in IT labor productivity improvements through streamlining server imaging from January 2005 to December 2009.
  • Using Altiris Client Management Suite, Aspirus realized about $430,000 in IT labor productivity gains.
  • Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 will produce an estimated $960,000 in end-user labor productivity gains from May 2008 through December 2009.
