Symantec Releases 2010 Corporate Responsibility Report

The Company's First Web-Based Report Addresses Progress Against Environmental, Social, and Governance Goals

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – October 11, 2010 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) announced today that it has launched its 2010 Corporate Responsibility Report, highlighting the company’s commitments and actions with respect to environmental, social and governance goals. This year’s report represents the company’s first web-based design, which offers increased transparency around the company’s progress against its corporate responsibility goals, as well as access to more specific data and metrics. It is Symantec’s goal to acknowledge both its successes and areas for improvement equally and to provide a candid assessment of its performance, particularly in the issue areas it has identified as most material to the business. The online report also examines Symantec’s practices and policies around corporate governance and ethics, as well as its philanthropy and community outreach strategy. In addition to environmental, social, and governance issues, the report includes a look into information security, customer satisfaction, climate change, human rights, diversity and inclusion, and talent retention. Highlights include:

  • In Fiscal Year 2010, Symantec continued to provide its groundbreaking Web-based service, Norton Online Family, for download free of charge. This service helps parents communicate more effectively with their children about responsible Internet use.
  • Symantec is committed to addressing the challenges of global climate change and supporting responsible energy and climate legislation. We are reducing our data center energy use and related greenhouse gas emissions by deploying our data storage and management solutions – and we’re helping our customers to reduce their energy use and associated costs, as well. Globally, nine Symantec sites were LEED-certified and ten Symantec buildings obtained ENERGY STAR ratings in the past year. Symantec also joined the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Leaders program to help us better measure and track our GHG emissions.
  • Workplace diversity and inclusive hiring and promotion are a business imperative for Symantec. As part of our continuing efforts to promote gender equality, Symantec declared its support for the Women’s Empowerment Principles in May 2010. The Principles, which were developed by the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and the United Nations Global Compact, identify important steps that businesses can take to advance and empower women.
  • Symantec believes the role of technology companies in protecting human rights, especially privacy and freedom of expression is important. In Fiscal Year 2010, Symantec completed a review of existing supply chain management practices and also published our first human rights policy.

Corporate Responsibility in Fiscal Year 2011 and Beyond
In addition to launching an interactive view of the 2010 Corporate Responsibility Report, Symantec is setting its goals for corporate responsibility for Fiscal Year 2011 and beyond. The areas that Symantec has committed to include Climate and Energy, Customer Satisfaction, Securing Information, Diversity & Inclusion and Human Rights. A few of those goals include:

  • Set a new overall GHG-reduction goal in line with Symantec’s growing business.
  • Increase Symantec customer and partner loyalty scores by 7 percent.
  • Be an advocate for cyber security and data breach legislation across Europe, Middle East, Africa (EMEA) and Asia-Pacific, Japan (APJ) regions.
  • Craft career development goals for 100 percent of top performing technical women.
  • Increase representation of women in leadership (managers – SVP level) from 25 percent to 27 percent globally in FY11 to better reflect the overall representation at the company.
  • Adopt and begin implementing a supplier code of conduct.
  • Define and publish Symantec’s corporate-wide position on privacy.
