The 2012 State of Information Survey is Symantec’s first survey covering everything from security to storage to cloud, virtualization and mobile. Information is key to organizations today as highlighted by business and IT executives at 4,506 organizations in 38 countries.
The 2012 State of Information Survey will be covered in three chapters. The first chapter will reveal the true value, cost and growth of digital information. The following chapters will look deeper into the behavior of information and people. Technology is evolving and so is the way in which information is protected - watch this space for the key findings and insight into the world of digital information.
Chapter 1: The value, cost and growth of information
Electronic information is more valuable than ever to organizations. Think about how many transactions are conducted online, or about the amount of virtual collaboration that takes place. Consider the phenomenal volumes of data businesses store and how critical that data is for day-to-day operations.
Despite the importance of information, many companies fall short when it comes to effectively managing this valuable resource. Businesses need to develop an "information-centric" model that helps address problems such as information sprawl, lost data and the high cost of storage.

The Index illustrates how much information is outside the confines of the traditional data center as a result of the proliferation of cloud and mobile computing. In the Digital Information Index above, information access and storage outside the firewall were determined for each country, taking into account mobile devices, laptops and the cloud. The total global sprawl was averaged and given the value of 100. Countries and regions experiencing higher sprawl are represented on the map by warmer colors and numbers above 100; areas experiencing less sprawl are represented by cooler colors and numbers below 100.
