Corporate Responsibility

Enrique Salem, President and Chief Executive Officer, Symantec Corporation Since launching the company’s first corporate responsibility report in 2008 we have made significant progress in delivering on our commitments, with a particular emphasis this past year on the environment and Green IT. This year we also reiterated our support for the ten principles of the United Nations Global Compact, which continues to guide the programs and initiatives in which we invest.

Through energy-conservation initiatives and green building practices, we cut our greenhouse gas emissions by eight percent from our FY08 baseline (measured in pounds per square foot), moving us well towards our 15 percent reduction goal by the end of FY12. We joined BICEP, an industry organization committed to promoting responsible energy and climate legislation in the United States, and tapped into our employees’ passion for environmental stewardship by establishing Green Teams to identify ways Symantec can minimize its environmental footprint. And we commissioned a report on Green IT that highlighted the rapid increase in uptake of Green IT solutions across industry sectors and continued to provide new software and services to help customers manage their own energy and emissions impacts.

We continue to advocate for online safety and data privacy and protection. In April 2009, we launched a groundbreaking Web-based service, OnlineFamily.Norton, that will help parents communicate more effectively with their children about responsible Internet use. Because we believe this is such an important tool, we are making this service available for free download until January 1, 2010. We are also implementing new privacy safeguards and participating in a broad range of industry working groups to push for comprehensive data protection standards.

These achievements demonstrate Symantec’s—and my own personal—commitment to sustained corporate responsibility leadership. Focusing on issues that are top priorities for our stakeholders and are relevant to our business strategy positions the company for long-term success.

Our efforts have not gone unnoticed. We were listed on the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index for the first time in FY09 and identified as a Software Industry Sector Mover by Sustainable Asset Management. Our 2008 Corporate Responsibility Report won the CERES-ACCA award for best first-time report, recognizing Symantec for its transparent and comprehensive discussion of the company’s material corporate responsibility issues.

As we look towards the future, I want to personally thank Symantec’s employees for their support of and dedication to our corporate responsibility initiatives. We hope to increase engagement with employees and other stakeholders, especially as we work to further reduce ours and our clients’ environmental footprint, deliver greater online protection, and tackle new priorities such as building a responsible sourcing program and a more sustainable supply chain.

I invite you to submit your comments and ideas on our progress to date and the challenges we still face. With your help, we look forward to many future successes.

Support for the United Nations Global Compact and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

On March 3, 2006, Symantec signed the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC). We proudly support its ten principles to promote human rights and environmental responsibility and to fight corruption, and encourage all companies to become signatories (see our press release). We also invite both business and broader civil society to join Symantec in declaring their support for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
