Stakeholders

Symantec engages with its stakeholders to learn about and respond to their needs, interests, and concerns. By developing a deeper understanding of stakeholder concerns, we can better live our core values and assure the security, availability, and integrity of information worldwide.

We engage with our stakeholders in many different ways:

  • We survey our customers to better understand how they use our products, what challenges they face from security threats or inefficient data management and storage, and how we can deliver better service before, during, and after a sale. Symantec uses focus groups, formal performance reviews, and customer feedback to gauge our customer satisfaction and identify areas for performance, quality, and reliability improvement.
  • We ask our employees to rate our performance as an employer and to share their ideas for how we can make our workplace truly best-in-class. For example, in August 2008 we launched a formal program to establish “Green Teams” throughout the company. Green Teams comprise employees with an interest in identifying and implementing environmentally responsible practices, raising awareness, and delivering measurable reductions in Symantec’s carbon footprint.
  • We reach out to our communities and talk to teachers and parents about how we can help address their online safety concerns. In response to these concerns, in April 2009 we launched OnlineFamily.Norton, a revolutionary new online safety service that encourages forthright and open communication between parents and children about responsible Internet usage.
  • We engage in activities and coalitions to promote changes in public policy that support our corporate responsibility objectives. For example, in 2009 we joined Business for Innovative Climate and Energy Policy (BICEP), a coalition of leading companies advocating for strong U.S. climate and energy policies to spur clean energy development and reduce global warming pollution. We also hosted approximately 1,000 attendees at the 2009 Symantec Government Symposium in Washington, D.C.
  • We participate in industry focus groups to discuss specific corporate responsibility challenges, develop solutions, and identify new opportunities to create sustainable products and services.

Listening to Your Feedback

Following the release of our 2008 Corporate Responsibility Report, we asked stakeholders representing enterprise clients, current employees, NGOs and partner organizations, academics and thought leaders, and socially responsible investors to provide feedback on the report and executive summary. Responses were gathered through the use of an online questionnaire.

Overall, stakeholders were positive about Symantec’s reporting effort, and praised Symantec’s candid tone, the company’s provision of tangible goals, and the breadth of information available in the report. At the same time, they encouraged Symantec to be more specific about its environmental performance and carbon footprint, international activities that support Symantec’s corporate responsibility objectives, supply chain accountability, and diversity performance.

By updating our corporate responsibility Web site, we are working to address these concerns and provide our stakeholders with information on the issues they care about. We invite your continued feedback and comments at cr@symantec.com.
