Use the Intelligent Updater files that are appropriate for your product version and platform.
Symantec Antivirus 8.0 reached its End of Support Life as of November 30, 2005 and Symantec Antivirus 8.1 reached its End of Support Life as of January 31, 2007, as defined in the Symantec Enterprise Technical Support Policy. Therefore virus definition updates are no longer supported for this product.
Symantec Antivirus 9.x will reach its End of Support Life as of March 31, 2009. Virus definition updates for version 9.x will be discontinued on April 1, 2009. Please contact your account manager or reseller for information about our current shipping versions.

Symantec Antivirus Server installations on Windows platforms (32-bit)
Use the .XDB file to update Symantec AntiVirus 32-bit server installations. This file enables the server to update virus definitions on the managed clients and on secondary servers. If you install the x86 executable file instead, the server cannot deploy the virus definitions.
Do not use the x86 executable file to update the server version of Symantec AntiVirus. If you have already applied the x86 files to the Symantec AntiVirus server, read the "Update virus definitions by using an .xdb file" section in the document Primary server does not update secondary servers or clients using the VDTM for how to enable the server to deploy virus definitions.
To use the .XDB file to update your virus definitions, read the "Copying an .xdb file" section in the document that is for your version of Symantec AntiVirus:
