What is the basic Imaging, PXE Server, and BootWorks overview?


The Deployment Solution provides patented technologies and utility tools to image managed client computers from a Deployment Web console. Imaging, the process of cloning a hard disk, saving it to a file, and restoring all hard disk data to another computer, is performed from DOS, requiring the managed computer to boot to DOS before overwriting, or imaging, its hard disk. The Deployment Solution provides the PXE Configuration tool to configure the Altiris PXE Server to boot the managed computer to DOS across the network. It also includes BootWorks to boot computers to DOS from embedded or hidden partitions on the local hard disk, and provides the Boot Disk Creator to set up boot files. The ImageExplorer allows you to edit image files before distributing and restoring a destination hard disk.

Imaging is performed using the Altiris RapiDeploy (rdeploy.exe) tool, which is accessed automatically when running deployment jobs from a Deployment Web console.

The Altiris PXE Server allows client computers to boot up to DOS over the network and run DOS-specific deployment jobs for computers that support Intel's PXE (Pre-boot Execution Environment) technology. This eliminates the need to have an operating system or BootWorks on the hard disk or to visit each managed computer with a DOS floppy disk. To run the PXE Server you must also install a DHCP Server.

The Altiris BootWorks is a patented technology that allows you to boot to DOS from a partition on the local disk. From the BootWorks partition you can install the Deployment Agent for DOS (bootworks.exe) on the local disk to manage the client computer when imaging the hard disk and assigning deployment jobs in DOS. BootWorks allows the client computer to log on to a file server to download packages and run DOS-specific deployment jobs.

The Altiris ImageExplorer is an editing tool for image files. After capturing an image of a hard disk, you can save it as an .IMG or .EXE file and then edit the image file by adding or deleting content files.
