Installing Carbon Copy Solution as the First Altiris Solution

If you are installing Carbon Copy Solution on a computer that has no other Altiris solutions, go to the Altiris Web site download page (http://www.altiris.com/Download.aspx) to download the Carbon Copy Solution installation files and the Altiris Installation and Configuration Manager files. The Altiris Installation and Configuration Manager will take you through the process of installing and configuring the Altiris Notification Server, which is the foundation on which Altiris solutions function.

To download the Carbon Copy installation files and the Altiris Installation and Configuration Manager files:

  1. Go to the Altiris Web site download page: http://www.altiris.com/Download.aspx.
  2. Download Carbon Copy Solution 6.2.
  3. Download the Altiris Installation and Configuration Manager.
  4. Go through the download process.
  5. On the Altiris Packager Self-Extracting Executable Options dialog, select Extract and Execute to begin the installation of the Altiris Notification Server and Carbon Copy Solution.

Installing or Upgrading Carbon Copy Solution from the Altiris Console

If the computer already has Altiris solutions, you can install or upgrade to Carbon Copy Solution 6.2 from the Altiris Console's Solution Center.

  1. On the computer running the Notification Server, open the Altiris Console.
  2. Click the Configuration tab.
  3. In the left pane, click Configuration > Upgrade/Install Additional Solutions.
  4. In the right pane, click Available Solutions.
  5. Click Solutions.
  6. Click Altiris Carbon Copy Solution.
  7. Click Start.

Upgrade Steps

  1. Start the Carbon Copy Solution 6.2 upgrade.

Important: Because of the new ability to enumerate NT and Active Directory domains, Carbon Copy Solution no longer connects using the Local Admin account on the remote computer. (This was the default security setting in previous versions of Carbon Copy.) If you have been using the Local Admin account to connect to remote computers, then you must configure security settings in the Carbon Copy Agent Settings configuration policy, or you will not be able to connect. We recommend that you configure security settings in the Carbon Copy Agent Settings configuration policy before you roll out the agent
  2. Configure security.
    1. In the Altiris Console, select Configure > Solutions > Carbon Copy > Carbon Copy Agent Configuration.
    2. Select the policy for the OS group to configure.
    3. Select the Authentication tab.
    4. Set up security. For details on security options, see "Authentication" in the Carbon Copy Solution 6.2 Help.
  3. Roll out Carbon Copy Agent 6.2 to client computers.

New Features in this Release

Improvements for this release include the following new features.

Remote Control Support for UNIX, Linux, and Mac Systems Leveraging VNC

Heterogeneous support by Carbon Copy Solution has been extended by adding the ability to connect to UNIX*, Linux*, and Mac* platforms using freely available VNC*. Computers using VNC are first detected using Inventory Solution information; then, VNC is available as an option when you connect to a remote computer.

Note: Carbon Copy Solution does not include or distribute VNC. You must roll out VNC separately to make it available for use with Carbon Copy Solution. See Prerequisites in the Installation and Upgrade section above for requirements for using VNC with Carbon Copy Solution.

Remote Control Using Microsoft Remote Desktop and Terminal Services

Carbon Copy Solution lets you connect to Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2003 computers using Remote Desktop, and to Windows NT and Windows 2000 computers using Terminal Services.

Dynamic NAT Support

Administrators can now specify a port when connecting through a NAT. This requires that the NAT server be configured to redirect connections to an internal IP address using port 1680.

Enhanced Security Through Enumeration of Trusted Domains

Environments that use multiple forest structures with trust between domains in their forests are now supported by Carbon Copy Solution. Administrators can add groups from additional domains without needing to be an actual member of the domain, provided that the domain is trusted.

Additional Options for Carbon Copy Solution Security Privileges

Carbon Copy Solution now includes these security role privileges:

  • Disable the remote and local keyboard, mouse, and display
  • Launch Remote Control
  • Modify Carbon Copy Agent settings

Connection Performance Improvements

The overall user experience has been improved by reducing the administrative wait time to make connections, and by decreasing performance lags during remote control and utility sessions.

Event Logging Improvements

Enhancements have been added to the Carbon Copy Agent's event logging schema, including additional console messages and additional Carbon Copy Events.

Ability to Disable Keyboard, Mouse, and Display

The security and usability of remote control sessions have been improved with new buttons in the Remote Control Window that disable and enable the local and the remote keyboard, mouse, and display.

Note: Disabling the remote display works only in Synchronous mode.

Additional Support for Hot Keys

Carbon Copy Solution now supports most function key combinations during remote control sessions, including Tab, Alt, F10, Ctrl, Ctrl+C, Alt+Tab, and Ctrl+Esc.

Licensing issues have been resolved, including license failure when attempting to connect to a Carbon Copy Client system where a BlockOut period has been enabled on the Altiris Agent as well as "License In Use" is reporting an incorrect value with respect to the "Installed Carbon Copy Clients."   33786

Known Issues in this Release

The following are unresolved issues in this release. For details regarding a known issue, click the Article ID link.

 Known Issue Article ID
Carbon Copy session authentication takes excessive amount of time  34560
Carbon Copy Standalone version should not be run on the same computer as the Carbon Copy Solution Agent
Carbon Copy Solution 6.2 does not support handheld devices

Carbon Copy Solution 6.2 does not support the remote control of handheld devices.

No support for Microsoft Windows Vista and 64-bit operating systems

The current version of Carbon Copy Agent does not support Microsoft Windows Vista (32-bit and 64-bit) and 64-bit operating systems (Windows XP 64-bit and Windows 2003 Server 64-bit). You should not attempt to roll out the Carbon Copy Agent to computers running those operating systems.

Windows Vista is, however, supported through RDP or VNC. For more information, see the topic "Remote Control Using Microsoft Remote Desktop and Terminal Services" in the section "New Features in this Release" in this release notes.

Carbon Copy Solution 6.2 Light Viewer 16 Color Display Problems

When Carbon Copy Solution 6.2 is using the light viewer and connecting to a managed computer that has its display settings configured to 16-color display, the light viewer will display a black screen. This occurs because 16-color display is not supported by the Carbon Copy light viewer.

The workaround for this issue is to either change the managed computer's display settings to 256 colors, or to use Carbon Copy's full viewer option to remotely manage these devices.

Desktop icons not displayed during remote control

The desktop icons may not be displayed when remote controlling a managed computer that contains all of the following:

  • Microsoft Windows* 2003 R2
  • Intel* 82010 chipset
  • 24 bit color display setting

This is caused because Carbon Copy Solution 6.2 remote control does not support 24-bit display settings for remote computers with this configuration.

To view desktop icons during remote control of devices with this software and this chipset, set the color depth display setting to 16 bit.

Synchronous Remote Control problems with NVIDIA GeForce 2 chipsets

Problems have been known to occur during synchronous remote control of computers equipped with NVIDIA GeForce 2* chipset. If you experience problems remotely controlling computers with NVIDIA GeForce2 chipsets, please use the asynchronous remote control option to remotely manage these computers.

Altiris recommends that you test synchronous mode in a lab environment to ensure that it functions properly with the video boards and drivers in your environment.

Carbon Copy Does Not support Citrix

We are aware of some issues when Carbon Copy Solution is used in the Citrix environment. Altiris does not recommend using Carbon Copy in those environments.
