What is Software Delivery Solution 6.1 SP2 for Windows?

Software Delivery Solution is a system that provides secure, bandwidth-sensitive distribution of applications and updates throughout your organization. Software Delivery Solution supports LAN, WAN, and remote and mobile clients from a single infrastructure and offers advanced application management features, such as application self-healing, conflict analysis, and other ongoing software management capabilities. Software Delivery Solution lets you define software packages, distribute software packages, and run programs on computers with Windows 9x/Me/NT/2000/XP/2003 operating system.

To define and deploy software packages and run programs, Software Delivery Solution works in conjunction with Altiris® Notification Server™ software and the Altiris Agent.  Programs can be scheduled to run immediately or on a specified schedule. You can use the Altiris Console to define and deploy a package that consists of a collection of programs. Once a package has been defined, you can create a Software Delivery task to deploy the package and to run programs in that package. In a Software Delivery task, you can specify a schedule to run a program, the security context used when a program is running, and the collection of computers to which the Software Delivery task applies.

Software Delivery Solution for Windows Documentation

Product documentation is available in the Software Delivery Solution for Windows 6.1 SP 2 Help (SWDelivery61SP2.pdf and SWDelivery61SP2.chm).

What is New in this Release?

Updated User Interface for Data Purging

The user interface for Data Purging is updated. The tasks and events that need to be purged are categorized into groups and displayed under the heading, Purge Hidden Software Delivery Task and Purge Software Events. You can purge the tasks immediately or on a specified schedule. The user interface also shows the data purging count and the last time the data was purged.

Software Delivery Solution Task Server Plug-in

Software Delivery Task Server Plug-in is built on the Task Server infrastructure and lets Software Delivery Solution leverage the benefits from it.

Task Server is an infrastructure that provides task automation and task sequencing. Being a separate package, Task Server can be installed on a computer with Notification Server or it can be installed on a separate computer without Notification Server.

Following table lists the features in Software Delivery Solution Task Server Plug-in:

 Feature Description

  1. New Deliver Software Task

A new Deliver Software task is added under the Client Tasks node. The Deliver Software task lets you deliver a software package containing programs to a collection of computers.

  1. New Select a Package Dialog

A new Select a Package dialog lets you create new folders, packages, and programs. In the left pane of the Select a Package dialog, you can view a list of platforms and the folders created on those platforms. In the right pane, you can view a list of packages and programs from the selected folder. A New drop-down menu is added to the top of the left pane. This menu lets you create a folder and a package. A New Program tool is added to the top of the right pane. This tool lets you create a new program in a selected package. The Filter and Search fields are added to the top of the right pane to search for a package from the packages list. The Filter field filters the package list based on the text you entered in it. The Search field lets you search for a particular package from the packages list.

Note: You have to select a folder to view a list of packages in that folder and you have to select a package to view a list of programs in that package. Filter option works only on the packages in the selected folder and not on those in its subfolders. Search option works on the packages in the selected folder and in its subfolders.

  1. Displaying the Task Execution Status

In the left pane, when you select a task from the Client Tasks node to run it on the client computer, you can see the task execution status in the Task Status section. The status information, such as Run Name, Start Time, Started By, and Summary is displayed for the task status. You can right-click on a task status item and select Details or double-click on a task status item to display the detailed information, such as Start Time, Started By, Total number of computers, and so on, about the selected task status item.

  1. Software Delivery Agent for Task Server Rollout and Software Delivery Agent for Task Server Uninstall policies provided on the Configuration page

Software Delivery Task Server Plug-in includes policies to install and uninstall the Software Delivery Task Server Plug-in Agent on a client computer. The Software Delivery Agent for Task Server Rollout policy is used to rollout the Software Delivery Task Server Plug-in Agent on a client computer and the Software Delivery Agent for Task Server Uninstall policy is used to uninstall the Software Delivery Task Server Plug-in Agent from a client computer.

  1. Configuring Deliver Software Task Status Messages

You can configure various status messages for the Deliver Software task that are provided on the Deliver Software Task Status page. After configuring these status messages and applying them to a collection of client computers, a client computer reports the task execution status information for the selected status messages to the Notification Server.

Note: To receive the task execution status information on the Notification Server, a Software Delivery Task Server Plug-in Agent should be running on a client computer.

  1. Run with rights option for a Program is supported

Software Delivery Solution for Task Server Plug-in supports the Run with rights option to select a user account for running a program. In the Altiris Console, the Programs tabview of the Packages page has the Run with rights drop-down list with user accounts, such as System Account, Logged in user, and Specified user.

The users can select a particular user account for a program to run on the target computers. The program is run on the target computers with the user account selected in the Run with rights drop-down list.

Note: If the selected user account does not have sufficient rights for running a program, the task fails.

  1. Program Can Run option for a Program is supported

Software Delivery Solution for Task Server Plug-in supports the Program Can Run option to select a condition for running a program. In the Altiris Console, the Programs tabview of the Packages page has the Program Can Run drop-down list with conditions, such as Only when user is logged on, Only when no user is logged on, and Whether or not user is logged on. The user can select a condition to let the program run on the target computers if the selected condition is matched. The conditions from the Program Can Run drop-down list are checked before the program starts running on the target computers.

Note: If the selected condition does not match for a target computer, a task failure status is reported to the Notification Server.

Fixes in this Release

Software Delivery Solution 6.1 SP2 resolves a number of issues to improve usability and reliability. Improvements include:

  • Improved context-sensitive help

  • Provided the At Logon and At System Startup schedule options that works for the Sequential Software Delivery task and the Software Migration task

  • Updated the Software Portal to hide the packages that are internal to the Notification Server

  • Updated the purging functionality for Sequential Software Delivery tasks. Now, the Sequential Software Delivery tasks that are created and require approval are purged after that task is deleted

  • Updated the Package Selector dialog to select the Software Virtualization packages for the Sequential Software Delivery task

  • Improved the options of Software Delivery tasks and Sequential Software Delivery tasks to allow modifying those tasks only if the user has write permission

  • Changed the Sequential Software Delivery task to display the execution status to all users

  • Enhanced the cloning and modification options for Software Delivery packages. The package cloning and modification is allowed if the user has read permissions

  • Improved the naming of Software Delivery Packages. The package name with quotes in it can be viewed in the Program Selector dialog box

  • Resolved the event flooding and event deadlock, due to Synchronization status events. The Synchronization Agent sends only one event after the task completes.

  • Resolved the issue of the Sequential Software Delivery tasks running based on the server time. Now the Software Delivery task runs based on the client computer time.

  • Provided a facility to view the Software Delivery packages for Sequential Software delivery tasks imported through Wise connector on the Package Selector dialog.

  • Improved the performance of w3wp.exe in utilizing the Notification Server CPU when displaying the status information for a Software Delivery task. For more information, see 23695.

    Note:
w3wp.exe is a process associated with the application pool in IIS. Each application pool running on the server has one instance of w3wp.exe running, which results in more consumption of server resources.
