Introduction

This document provides the installation, what’s new, and known issues information for the 6.1 release of Inventory Solution for RIM.

Inventory Solution for RIM reduces the cost of identifying and managing RIM handhelds throughout the enterprise. You can easily track comprehensive RIM handheld information for RIM assets throughout their lifecycle. Data is normalized, consolidated, and secured in a central repository, enabling detailed reporting of asset information from the convenience of a secure web console. 

Installation and Upgrade

Prerequisites

Inventory Solution 6.1 for RIM requires Altiris® Notification Server 6.0. The Notification Server minimum requirements are documented in the Altiris Notification Server Help. The managed RIM handhelds require the Altiris RIM Inventory Agent installed. The Altiris RIM Inventory Agent is documented in the Inventory Solution 6.1 for RIM Product Guide.

Where to Download

You can download released versions of Altiris products from http://www.altiris.com/Download.aspx.

You can download beta versions of Altiris products from http://beta.altiris.com.

New Installation or Upgrade

You can install or upgrade from either the Altiris Download page or from the Solution Center using the Altiris Console.

To download and extract the installer files from the Altiris Download page

1. Go to the Altiris Web site download page (http://www.altiris.com/Download.aspx).
2. Enter your e-mail address.
3. Select the product you want to install: Inventory Solution for RIM.
4. Click Submit.
5. Read and accept the license agreement.
6. Click Download Altiris Installation and Configuration Manager.
7. Click Run.

To install or upgrade Inventory Solution for RIM from the Solution Center

1. Open the Altiris Console.
2. Click the Configuration tab.
3. In the left pane, click Upgrade/Install Additional Solutions.
4. On the content pane, click the Available Solutions tab and then click Solutions.
5. From the list of solutions, select Inventory Solution for RIM. The Solution Update screen appears.
6. On the Solution Update screen, click Start to begin the solution download.
7. When the download completes, on the content pane, click the Currently Installed tab. Here, you can view all the installed solutions.

RIM 850, 857, 950, 957 Host Computer Prerequisites

In order for the Altiris RIM Inventory Agent to initialize successfully on BlackBerry 5000-8000 series models, the host computer must meet the following prerequisites:

- BlackBerry Desktop Software 3.6 or later.
- BlackBerry Handheld Software 2.5 or later. We recommend the latest version.

 
RIM 850, 857, 950, 957 Inventory E-mail

When Altiris RIM Inventory Agent sends inventory from the handheld, this e-mail will be stored in the inbox of the handheld. After the inventory e-mail has been sent, it is safe for the user to delete this e-mail without adversely affecting the collection of inventory.
 
BlackBerry 5000-8000 Host Computer Prerequisites

In order for the Altiris RIM Inventory Agent to initialize successfully on BlackBerry 5000-8000 series models, the host computer must meet the following prerequisites:

- BlackBerry Desktop Software 3.6 or later.
- BlackBerry Handheld Software 3.6 or later. We recommend the latest version.
- The host computer must be in the same domain as the exchange server. An indication of the host computer not being in the same domain as the exchange server is if the user sees an e-mail with the subject “AltirisRIMInventoryConfiguration” persist in the handheld’s inbox.

 
 BlackBerry 5000-8000 Handheld Software Dependencies

In order for the Altiris RIM Inventory Agent to initialize successfully on BlackBerry 5000-8000 series models, the handheld must meet the following prerequisites: 

- The BlackBerry Attachment Service module must be installed on the handheld. 
- The Tasks module must be installed on the handheld.  
- The handheld must be configured to the proper e-mail account and successfully sending\receiving e-mail for that account.  
- In some cases, the latest version of the handheld's Handheld Software must be installed on the handheld. (Check with provider for latest Handheld Software for handheld model)
 
BlackBerry 5000-8000 Configuration  

In some cases, users may notice an e-mail with the subject line “AltirisRIMInventoryConfiguration” persisting in their handheld’s inbox. This may be caused by either not having met the above described prerequisites or by the Altiris RIM Inventory Agent not being properly initialized on the handheld device. If the prerequisites have been met, the user should attempt the following to resolve this issue:

- Delete the e-mail with the subject line “AltirisRIMInventoryConfiguration”.
- Soft reset the handheld by pressing the soft reset button or removing the battery.
- Have the Administrator resend the configuration for the handheld. 

The handheld should now intercept the configuration e-mail and the user will not see it.
