 Upgrade Issues

During an upgrade of Altiris Pocket PC Agent and Inventory Solution for Pocket PC all default tasks, packages and programs may revert back to their default settings.  Custom tasks, packages, and programs will not be modified by this upgrade.

All default Inventory Tasks will be disabled (if they were previously enabled) during the upgrade of Inventory Solution for Pocket PC.  To fix this, simply re-enable the affected tasks.

Upgrading the Pocket PC Agent on Handhelds

When upgrading the Pocket PC Agent on your Pocket PC handhelds, you can complete the following steps to ensure the old agent successfully upgraded to the new agent.

1. The default upgrade task (Configuration Tab > Configuration > Altiris Agent > Altiris Agent Rollout > Handhelds > Pocket PC > Agent Upgrade) is set to install to a new collection (Configuration Tab > Configuration > Altiris Agent > Altiris Agent Rollout > Handhelds > Pocket PC > Pocket PC Handhelds Requiring Agent Upgrade) containing only Pocket PC handhelds, which are in need of the upgrade.

2. The default upgrade task is set to try and install every 6 hours and download the new agent 2 hours before running.  This is to work around a bug in the old agent that could prevent the new agent from being upgraded.  Because of this workaround to get the new agent to install, we highly recommend setting the Pocket PC Agent’s configuration “Request new configuration every:” to “3 Hours” (Configuration Tab > Configuration > Altiris Agent > Altiris Agent Configuration > Handhelds > Pocket PC > Pocket PC Devices).  This will enable the agent to recognize that it is upgraded and not download the new upgrade package after it is already upgraded.

New Features in this SP3 Release

Improvements for this release include the following new features:

Supported Devices

Windows Mobile 5 devices are now supported.

Known Issues in this Release

The following are unresolved issues in this release.

 Known Issue

Agent Uninstall

As of Notification Server 6.0 SP1 Hotfix 14, the Altiris Pocket PC Agent shows up on the “Currently Installed” Tab of the Solution Center with the option to uninstall the agent.  Doing so while any solutions that rely on the Altiris Pocket PC Agent are installed will cause those solutions to stop working.  In this case, a reinstallation of those solutions, as well as the agent, will be required.

Including Language Resources during Existing Agent Upgrades

After installing the update you will be able to include English and German resource files so that the agent displays English or German strings.  By default when upgrading the agent, both English and German resources are packaged and delivered to the client devices.  If your needs are only for one or the other language you may remove the resource files for the language you do not wish to send to your client devices.

The default path to the language resource files is:
C:\Program Files\Altiris\Notification Server\NSCap\Bin\Handhelds\PocketPC\Agent Upgrade\LangRes

The files are as follows:
English Language Resource File: AtrsLang00000409.dll
German Language Resource File: AtrsLang00000407.dll

If you do not wish to install the German Language Resource file on your client computers using the default upgrade package, simply remove the AtrsLang00000407.dll from this directory.

If you remove one of the files and later need it you can also copy it out of the following folder (default path):  C:\Program Files\Altiris\PocketPCAgent\Agent Files\LangRes.

Including Language Resources on New Pocket PC Agent Installations

During installation of the Altiris Pocket PC Agent, setup detects what language the Notification Server is installed onto. If Notification Server is installed on a German server then it sets the client agent to default the German Language Resources. If the server is any other language than it sets the client agent to install the English Language Resources.

To include language resources, or to exclude language resources you do not need, use the utility Set Pocket PC Agent Server that is accessible from Start > All Programs > Altiris > Solutions > Handheld Management Suite > Set Pocket PC Agent Server.

This utility lets you select single or multiple languages to include with new installations of the Altiris Pocket PC Agent.

Pocket PC Agent Manager

If the Pocket PC Agent Manager (Configuration Tab > Configuration > Altiris Agent > Altiris Agent Rollout > Handhelds > Pocket PC > Install Pocket PC Agent Manager) was used to install the Pocket PC Agent on handhelds, you will need to re-configure and enable agent rollout this task.
