Introduction

Altiris IT Analytics Solution software complements and expands upon the traditional reporting offered in most Altiris solutions. It brings exciting new features and capabilities to the Altiris platform by incorporating multi-dimensional analysis and robust graphical reporting and distribution features. This allows users to explore data on their own, without advanced knowledge of databases or third-party reporting tools, empowering them to ask and answer their own questions quickly, easily, and effectively.

Installation and Upgrade

You must install IT Analytics Solution before installing one of the Management Packs: IT Analytics Client Management Pack, IT Analytics Asset Management Pack, or IT Analytics Service Management Pack.

New Installation

To install Altiris IT Analytics Solution:

  1. In the Altiris Console, click the Configuration tab.
  2. In the left pane, click Upgrade/Install Additional Software.
  3. In the right pane, click the Altiris IT Analytics Solution link.
  4. Follow the installation wizard instructions.

What's New in this Release

Altiris IT Analytics Solution 6.1 provides several enhancements that focus on improved administrative capabilities and overall end user experience. Improvements for this release include the following new features:

Monitor management operations

Improved end user ability to monitor the management operations via robust event logging and presentation of context appropriate events during configuration activities.

Manage SQL Server Analysis Services Security Roles

The ability to manage SQL Server Analysis Services Security Roles for end user privilege management to cubes from within the Altiris Console.

Utilize SQL Server Report Builder capabilities to manage reports on cubes

The ability to utilize SQL Server Report Builder capabilities to allow end users to create and manage user defined reports based on installed IT Analytics cubes in a visual editor launched from the Altiris Console.

Enhanced Pivot Tables

Enhanced Pivot Tables with the addition of a full range of charting options, and the ability to save frequently used views of pivot tables and charts.

Create a new dimension from a defined data class

The ability to create a new dimension derived from an end user defined data class.

Troubleshooting Report Errors

When viewing reports and dashboards hosted in SQL Server 2005 SP2 Reporting Services, intermittent errors occur with the following message:

An internal error occurred on the report server. See the error log for more details. (rsInternalError)

This issue is caused by a problem with AMD processors with the PowerNow technology enabled in the BIOS (note this is also referred to as Cool’n’Quiet technology). This technology causes intermittent CPU timing errors that affect SQL Server Reporting Services.

To resolve this issue, either update the BIOS to disable this technology, or install the following update from Microsoft: Cumulative update package 5 for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;LN;943656.

Query Processing Errors

When browsing an IT Analytics Pivot Table, the following message appears in the Office Web Component data area:

The query could not be processed: The data provider didn't supply any further error information.

This issue is most frequently caused if the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services 9.0 OLE DB Provider does not exist on the client browser. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services 9.0 OLE DB Provider is required for the Office Web Components to communicate with SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services. This is a standard component bundled with recent Microsoft products such as Office 2007 and SQL Server 2005 Management Studio, and is also available from the Microsoft Web site. To download Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services 9.0 OLE DB Provider, navigate to the section labeled “Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services 9.0 OLE DB Provider” at the following URL:

Only ANSI alphanumeric characters available for use in Cube Security Role Names

When naming a Security Role in the Security tab of the Cube Setup page, the set of characters available for use is currently restricted to ANSI alphanumeric characters, and other characters that are input into the Security Role Name field will be discarded prior to saving. The impact of these restrictions for Unicode languages such as Chinese is that any Chinese characters that are used as a part of the Security Role Name is removed from the name prior to saving. In the event that all characters used were Chinese characters, for example, the name is evaluated as an empty string and the end user is prompted to enter a name and the Security Role will not be saved.

Altiris NS 6.0 SP3 Update (KB39159) R7 creates issue with IT Analytics SSRS Reports

Problem/Symptoms

Upon installation of Notification Server 6.0 SP3 Update (KB39159), the SQL Server Reporting Services Reports within Altiris IT Analytics Solution do not function.

Environment

This issue is isolated to the circumstance where the instance of SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services that it utilized by Altiris IT Analytics Solution is on the same host as the Notification Server, and the Reporting Services Virtual Directory is configured to use the same Application Pool in IIS as the Notification Server.

Cause

In this instance, the application of R7 forces the Application Pool that is utilized for Notification Server to operate under .Net 1.1, which in turn causes the Reporting Services Web pages to return a Server Unavailable Error due to the fact that they require .NET 2.0 to function properly.

Resolution

In environments where the Notification Server and SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services are installed on the same host, the resolution is to utilize separate IIS Application Pools for each. We recommend that you use the DefaultAppPool for Notification Server, and create a new Application Pool named ReportingServices to use with the two Virtual Directories required by SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services. When separate Application Pools are used, the Notification Server utilizes .Net 1.1 and Reporting Services utilizes .Net 2.0 and each is able to function properly.

Note: After changing the Reporting Services Virtual Directories to utilize a new Application Pool, you must recycle both Application Pools used for Reporting Services and Notification Server to ensure that each functions properly.
