Introduction

pcAnywhere Solution helps organizations access and manage remote computers securely across multiple platforms. You should have at least two computers that are running the Symantec Management Platform in your environment. Each platform should also have managed computers.

pcAnywhere Solution is part of Altiris™ Client Management Suite from Symantec.

Update: Localized documentation for this product is now available for French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Japanese, and Simplified Chinese.

To install localized documentation, open the Symantec Installation Manager, click Check for Updates and select the language documentation package that you want to install.

Support for Access Server

The pcAnywhere Access Server is supported through pcAnywhere Solution. Within the configuration dialog box, a user can select an access server to use for Web-enabled remote control.

Native Whiteboard Support

Within a remote control session, you can use drawing tools to highlight objects and simplify communication for help desk support.

Enhanced Keyboard Commands

Initiate common actions quickly through keyboard commands.

Copy and Paste Using Efficient Speedsend File Transfer

Using standard copy and paste commands, you can initiate a file transfer session for the efficient transfer of data between host and remote.

Before installing pcAnywhere Solution on Windows 2000, you must install the 3.1 Windows installer.

On localized (non-English) versions, the text on the Options icon is not visible on the pcAnywhere Quick Connect dialog box.

Playing session recording files requires Enterprise version
Unless pcAnywhere Enterprise 12.5 or another pcAnywhere 12.5 box product is installed, you cannot play back session recording files.

If a pcAnywhere Solution reboot policy is applied, a managed computer might not restart. In this case, pcAnywhere Solution runs with a backup driver.

If you installed the Carbon Copy agent on the same server computer as the Symantec Management Platform, you need to uninstall the Carbon Copy agent manually before installing pcAnywhere Solution. Otherwise, pcAnywhere Solution does not start as expected.

Software Filters menu options for Mac
For Macintosh computers, only the Remote Control option is available in the Manage > Software Filters menu. The Retire and Dispose Licenses options are not available.

On Windows platforms, pcAnywhere Solution always installs to the \Program Files\Symantec\pcAnywhere directory, regardless of any other location that you specify.

Deployment tasks must be set to go to all package servers
For some pcAnywhere deployment tasks, if your packages are not set to go to all package servers, some clients will not receive the package under certain circumstances. Check that your tasks are set to go to all package servers, rather than defaulting to go to sites.

License state reports as an active error
The following pcAnywhere Inventory logs are reported as errors in the Symantec Management Platform log viewer. However, the logs really show debug logs of pcAnywhere Solution.
  • License state is Active.
  • Policy Enabled.
  • Policy Not Enabled.
  • Item count.
  • Inside pcA.
To exclude these errors from appearing in the log viewer, complete the following steps:
  1. Go to the log viewer > Options > Filters.
  2. Add the string that you want to exclude to the exclude text box.

You can separate multiple strings with semicolons. For example, pcAnywhereInventory :: License state is Active;Policy Enabled;Policy Not Enabled;ITem count:;Inside pca;xml =; excludes all of the fake error messages from appearing in the log viewer.

Packages might not deploy correctly to child servers
If your parent Notification Server is installed to a different location than a child server, you might not be able to deploy pcAnywhere packages to computers that are managed by your child server. The workaround is to edit the package source location or copy the packages to the correct location.

Installing HPCM 7.0 and pcAnywhere Solution
Installing HPCM 7.0 and pcAnywhere Solution causes a conflict of the GUID for the pcAnywhere Hosts by Version report and the HPCM All Computers with Archived Embedded Security Credentials and Settings and Password Token file report. This error is reported in the Notification Server log files and neither of the reports can be used. You can re-create the report with the same query if you need it.

Access Server and pcAnywhere caller authentication password
The pcAnywhere caller authentication password and the Access Server password on the Linux and Mac platforms is limited to five characters. If you require more than a five-character password with pcAnywhere caller authentication, you can use PAM/OpenDirectory authentication instead.

pcAnywhere configuration page with Access Server setting
If pcAnywhere Solution is configured with Access Server settings and with an Access Server password of more than five characters, an error message generates on Notification Server. In order to continue, you need to click on the message box on the server. As a workaround, configure Access Server with a group and a group password.
