Introduction

HP Client Manager version 7.0 is a Web-based application specifically designed for HP computers to leverage HP's manageability technology. HPCM offers greater capabilities and enhanced features, such as:

  • Client inventory
  • Driver and utility updating
  • Remote BIOS management
  • Remote Embedded Security management
  • Hardware monitoring
  • Diagnostics
  • Problem resolution

These features allow you to efficiently manage HP and Compaq desktops, workstations, and notebook computers.

HP Client Manager 7.0 includes Symantec Out of Band Management Solution, which supports ASF, Intel vPro and DASH Technology. You can use Symantec Out of Band Management Solution to perform discovery, hardware inventory, power management, alerting, and other configuration tasks on HP computers vPro systems, independently of system power and OS state.

For additional support of Intel* vPro and DASH Technology, you can purchase Altiris Real-Time System Manager. This solution allows administrators and help desk technicians to manage remote computers real-time using Intel* Active Management Technology (Intel* AMT), Alert Standard Format (ASF), DASH and Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) technologies through a Web browser. It provides detailed real-time information about the health and status of a remote computer, and allows those with appropriate permissions to perform administrative tasks such as BIOS configuration, remote diagnostics and repair using Serial over Lan (SOL) and IDE-Re-direct, rebooting the computer, resetting a password, running a traceroute, performing a port check, event logging, and more.

      New Installation

      Installation and upgrading is managed through the Symantec Installation Manager. To begin an installation or upgrade, go to www.altiris.com/Download.aspx.

      Upgrade Steps

      If you are upgrading from Notification Server 6x or HP Client Manager 6x, you must first migrate your Notification Server to 7.0, then you can use Symantec Installation Manager to upgrade HP Client Manager to 7.0. For more information, see the Symantec Management Platform Installation Guide.

      Known Issues in this Release

      Hierarchy / Replication Support 
      HP Client Manager does not support Hierarchy / Replication even though it is supported under the Symantec Management Console (Notification Server).
      Possible Blue Screens
      After an HP Tools update, HPCM 7.0 contains SSM 2.00 G 2 which, when used on certain systems, causes Blue Screens.

      When attempting to set a 32 character password with special characters (!@#$) via HP Client Manager, certain systems can produce a Blue Screen. Some of these systems continue to reboot with a Blue Screen because the task to apply the password continues upon the restart of the HPCM agent.

      In general, we recommend that you do not use 32 character passwords for HPCM supported systems even though only older systems are affected.

      NOTE: An upcoming update to SSM will resolve the blue screen issues.

      Blank local alerts are seen on 2006 notebooks when making BIOS changes
      Certain 2006 Notebooks generate blank alerts when making BIOS configuration changes. After the BIOS configuration change is made, the local alert message box may appear without any text. An updated BIOS from HP may resolve this issue.
      XW4300 with XP or Vista: Cannot modify boot order due to invalid characters in the ROM
      A bug in the BIOS of the XW4300 prevents HPCM from modifying BIOS settings. A future BIOS upgrade may resolve this issue.
      Boot order change does not work on any blade
      This is as designed. The root cause seems to be the integrated administrator (IA) within the enclosure. The IA overrides any boot order BIOS modifications on the blade itself.
      Local Alerts: Video Monitor serials information is not getting captured
      Monitors connected to a KVM may not supply the proper EDID information via the WMI provider.
      XP 64 bit OS support
      Activecheck (HP Instant Support Health Scan) is not supported on XP 64 bit OS
      HPCM 7 Licensing: Trial license vs permanent license
      Once the HPCM 90 day trial license expires, server based tasks will no longer function. Please use the HPCM Portal page to access the link to the permanent license for HPCM.
      XW6600 and XW8600 computers do not have proper BIOS settings to enable the Embedded Security Chip in the standard way
      During initialization of the Embedded Security chip, a choice to select either “F1 to accept or F2 to reject” changes is presented upon the boot of the computer. For these options to be presented, they must be present in the BIOS. The XW6600 and XW8600 computers do not have this present in the BIOS and therefore do not have this capability.

      Workaround: The chip can be enabled and the owner password can be set, but the ability to display “F1 to accept and F2 to reject” changes option will not be available until HP provides an updated BIOS.

      BIOS Admin wizard: The Advanced tab shows hyphen chars (--) as available settings
      Administrators should ignore the hyphens when using the Advanced BIOS Administration wizard.
      HP Client Manager ability to modify/set BIOS passwords (8 char, 32 char, case sensitive, special char, numeric keypad, etc.)
      • HP systems prior to mid 2005 support 8 character case sensitive passwords.
      • They do not support special characters (!, @, #, etc)HP systems after mid 2005 supoprt 32 character, case sensitive, special character passwords as well as numeric keypad based passwords.
      • The HPCM 7 implementation of passwords is limited to case insensitive.
      Local Alerts: CPU change alerts will only be displayed if unlike processors are being swapped
      If an unlike CPU is swapped into the system, HPCM will present an alert. If a like CPU is swapped, no alert is presented.
      Sequence of the web parts
      The sequence of the web parts on the HP Client Manager Portal page may change upon a refresh.
      Importing of HP HealthScan SoftPaqs halts at 100%
      Description: When you import the HP HealthScan Softpaqs, the progress bar for the download hangs at 100%. In addition, the list of available SoftPaqs available for download is not updated to reflect that any of the SoftPaqs have been downloaded.

      Workaround: Bring up the Task Manager and end the SSMMain.exe and SSM.exe processes. Once those processes are stopped, the Import HP HealthScan SoftPaqs process will work.

      HPCM 7 does not produce chassis intrusion alerts (hardware health alerts)
      By default, the Cover Removal Sensor is disabled in the HP BIOS for various systems. In order to see the HPCM alert, you must enable the Sensor. In F10, go to 'Security | Smart Cover | Cover Removal Sensor' and set it to 'Notify User'.
      HPCM Portal will display alerts (in the 3rd pane) only in English
      HPCM alerts are displayed directly from WMI which are available only in English.
      Installation of the WMI provider fails on Windows 2000 computers
      Description: On Windows 2000 computers, attempts to install the WMI provider will fail. 71706

      Workaround: None.

      On Windows 2008 Notebook 8730w computers, false “setup password” alerts may be generated
      Description: When you change the BIOS settings on Windows 2008 Notebook 8730 computers, a setup password alert is generated, even though you have not changed the password. 73194

      Workaround: None. This alert can safely be ignored.

      WSMAN event messages do not display details in the Altiris Event Console

      WSMAN event messages in the Altiris Event Console do not contain a description of the event.  A detailed description of WS-MAN event messages in the Altiris Event Console can be obtained in the following Altiris KB article: 43656.
