Description

Build number 7.0.1225

Wise Connector lets you import software packages and their associated meta data from a Wise Software Repository into Software Management Framework. Wise Connector imports software packages from a Wise Package Studio share point directory into the Software Library. It also imports the meta data associated with a software package from a Software Manager database into the Software Catalog. After you import software packages with their meta data from the Wise Software Repository, those responsible for distributing the software can easily deliver and manage them.

Features

The features of this product are as follows:

Connection settings

Before you can import data from a Wise Package Studio data provider, you must configure a connection to the Wise Software Repository. You configure a connection to the repository by adding a Wise Package Studio data provider in the Symantec Management Console. You add a Wise Package Studio data provider on the Data Provider Management page. You access this page on the Settings menu at Settings > Software > Data Provider. If you have more than one Software Manager database, you can configure a separate connection to each.

Precedence settings

After you configure a connection to the Wise Software Repository, you should configure the precedence settings for the Wise Package Studio data provider. The precedence settings determine when the Wise Software Repository data can update meta data that is already in the Software Catalog. Precedence settings also determine when other data providers can update the meta data that is imported from the Wise Software Repository. You set precedence settings for specific types of meta data. You can set precedence settings for each type of meta data that you can import with Wise Connector except file inventory data. File inventory data is additive, so precedence settings do not apply.

Data import

After you configure a connection to the Wise Software Repository, you can import its available software resources.  A software resource is available if the software package is an importable package type and has a status of Available in the Software Manager database.

You can import the available software packages with their meta data or import only the meta data. If you import only the meta data, the software resource in the Software Catalog references the software package in the wise share directory. If the meta data is already in the Software Catalog, precedence settings determine if Wise Connector can import the data.

Wise Connector lets you import data with either of the following methods:

  • Scheduled import

With a scheduled import, Wise Connector imports all available software resources. You schedule an import on the Wise Package Studio Data Provider page.

  • Manual import

If you want more control over what is imported, you can manually import specific software resources instead of importing them on a schedule. To manually import specific software resources, you first gather a list of the available software resources. The gathered software resources appear on the Data Provider Summary page. On this page, you can select the specific software resources that you want to import. You access the Data Provider Summary page from the Manage menu by clicking Software.

Types of meta data Wise Connector imports

When Wise Connector imports a software resource, it can populate the Software Catalog with the following types of meta data:

  • Package

The package data defines the software packages that are associated with a software resource. When Wise Connector imports an MSI, WSE, or VSA package, it creates command lines for the package.

Wise Connector can import package data for a software resource for multiple types of software packages. However, it cannot import package data for a software resource for two software packages of the same type.

  • Detection rule

A detection rule is used to determine if a software resource is installed. When Wise Connector imports an MSI, a detection rule is created that checks for the MSI file’s product code.

  • Associations

The associations data defines the associations the software resource has with other software resources in the Software Catalog. Associations that are defined in Wise Package Studio are imported as long as both software resources exist in the Software Catalog.

  • File Inventory

The File Inventory data defines the DLL and EXE files that a software resource installs.

Types of software packages Wise Connector imports

Wise Connector can import the following types of software packages from the Wise Software Repository:

  • InstallShield Developer EXE
  • Microsoft hotfix
  • Universal Import
  • Virtual Software Package
  • Windows Installer
  • WiseScript.

If a Windows Installer package has one or more patches or transforms applied, a command line for the patches or transforms is created in the package’s software resource in the Software Catalog. If the package is imported into the Software Library, the applied transform or patch packages are also imported.

A command line is created for a transform only if it exists and is available when the  .MSI is imported

When you import an MSI from the Wise Software Repository that has a transform applied to it, a command line for the transform appears on the Package tab of the MSI’s software resource in the Software Catalog. However, if you apply a transform to the MSI in Software Manager after the MSI is imported, the transform’s command line is not imported with subsequent imports.
