Description
Build number 7.0.2684
AltirisTM Software Management Framework from Symantec provides a structure in which to store, access, and identify software in a common manner. It enhances software manageability by promoting integration between functions such as software delivery and inventory. Software Management Framework integrates closely with Software Management Solution.
This component is part of the Symantec Management Platform 7.0 SP2 release. For release notes, see knowledgebase article 46035.
This document contains the following topics:
New features
The new features of this release are as follows:
Software Catalog Data Provider support
You can import data from the Software Catalog Data Provider into Software Management Framework. You can import the metadata of a software resource from a Software Catalog Data Provider into the Software Catalog. When you import the metadata, a software resource is created in the Software Catalog if it does not already exist.
The Software Catalog Data Provider is available with the release of Client Management Suite 7.0 SP1. Software Catalog Data Provider enhances Notification Server's ability to identify the software that has been detected on the managed computers in your environment. It uses rules to identify software that otherwise cannot be identified.
Software Catalog Data Provider is needed to identify software in the following instances:
- The information that identifies the software cannot be gathered from Add/Remove Programs.
- The software is identified as a suite, and you need to identify a specific product in the suite.
- The software is identified as a product, and you need to identify the suite.
Software Catalog Data Provider also lets you identify the edition of a software product such as standard, professional, or enterprise.
Software Catalog Data Provider is installed when you install Inventory Solution 7.0 SP1. By default, after it is installed, its software resources are gathered and its inventory task runs twice a week. This inventory task compares the software resources that were gathered with the software that was detected in your environment. If a match is found between its software resources and the detected software, the software resource is imported into the Software Catalog. The software resource is created with minimum metadata that consists of company (vendor) name, software name, and version. You can then use this software resource to manage this software on the managed computers in your environment.
For more information see the Software Catalog Data Provider 7.0 Release Notes.
Software Data Provider Status report
The Software Data Provider Status report lets you view the status of the import tasks for all data providers or for a specific data provider.
Data Providers Web part
The Data Providers Web part lets you view a list of registered data providers. For each data provider, the list displays the number of available software resources and when an import or gather last ran. A software resource is available if it has data that is ready to be imported.
Ability to define software installation files when adding or editing a package
A Package contents section has been added to the Add or Edit Package dialog box. When you add or edit a package, this section lets you define the contents of a package including the installation file.
Timeout option on the Software Library Configuration page
The Software Library Location page is now the Software Library Configuration page. This page has a new Timeout option. This option lets you specify the number of seconds to wait before a server timeout occurs when you manage a package in the Software Library. If you encounter problems when you manage a package that contains large files, increase this value.
Support for additional installation file types
The Command Line Builder now includes support for the following installation file types:
- RTE: A native software installation package for AIX.
- DEPOT: A software depot for HP-UX.
Security role name change
The Symantec Software Packagers security role has been changed to Symantec Software Librarian.
