Description

This document contains instructions for upgrading to Symantec Workspace Streaming 6.1 SP1 from Symantec Workspace Streaming 6.1 or from Altiris SVS Pro 5.2 SP3 MP1.

If you are running a previous version of Altiris SVS Pro, you must upgrade to 5.2.2 SP3 MP1 before upgrading to Workspace Streaming 6.1 SP1.

Before you upgrade

Database backup

We recommend performing a full database backup before upgrading. The upgrade process uses scripts to update your database schema to the latest version.

Configuration backup

Any custom configuration files must be backed up before upgrading. Any portal customizations as well as any changes in the following files should be backed up:

  • Appstreamcfg.txt
  • Setupcfg.txt
  • maxSeats.properties
  • ConsoleConfig.xml

Custom changes in any of these files should be merged with the new version after the upgrade completes.

Backup server settings

If you are using backup servers, make a note of your configuration settings before upgrading (backup server hostnames, ports, and so on). Backup servers must be re-added in the Streaming Console after the upgrade completes. See the "Changes in Network Ports Between 5.x and 6.x" section in this document.

Custom reports

Any custom reports should be backed up before upgrading. These reports can be recopied when the upgrade completes.

Changes in Network Ports Between 5.x and 6.x

In 6.1, the front-end server components (Streaming Portal and Launch Server) were consolidated to use a single port. This means that a separate port is no longer required for the Streaming Server. In 6.1, both the Streaming Portal and Launch Server use port 80.

When you upgrade from 5.x, your Streaming Server continues to use the previously configured port (9823 by default). If you are using servers that were upgraded from 5.x in the same environment with new 6.1 servers, the Streaming Server components will be on different ports. This is important to consider when using backup servers and load balancers.

For backup servers, if the backup server was upgraded from 5.x, the External Port Number should be set to the previously configured Streaming Server port (9823 by default). If the backup server is a new 6.1 installation, the External Port Number should be set to the consolidated front-end port (80 by default).

For load balancers, if the front-end server was upgraded from 5,x, the external port should be set to the previously configured Streaming Server port (9823 by default). If the front-end server is a new 6.1 installation, the external port should be set to the consolidated front-end port (80 by default).

After you upgrade, you can change the Launch Server to use port 80 by completing the following:

  1. Open the Streaming Console.
  2. Click Configuration > Streaming Server.
  3. Click Basic.
  4. Change the Port number and click Save.
  5. Restart the AWE Streaming Server Windows service.

Server upgrade

Back-end servers should be upgraded before any other servers.

Starting with your back-end server, run the Workspace Streaming server installation on each server hosting a streaming component (back-end, front-end, backup, and so on). The installer detects the existing installation and upgrades the necessary components. You are not prompted to reboot your server after upgrade.

Agent upgrade

We recommend using a software distribution application, such as Altiris Client Management Suite, to upgrade the Agent.

Agent upgrade using the client installation executable

The Streaming Agent can be upgraded to 6.1 SP1 directly from Workspace Streaming 6.1 or from SVS Pro 5.2 SP3 MP1. The installation can be performed by a user with admin privileges or silently through a software distribution application.

Agent upgrade from the Streaming Portal

The Streaming Agent can be upgraded to 6.1 SP1 directly from Workspace Streaming 6.1 or from SVS Pro 5.2 SP3 MP1 by a user without admin privileges.
