Introduction

Virtual Machine Management is a component of the Server Management Suite that lets you perform the virtualization process on your network. Virtualization is a technology that lets you make optimum use of the hardware resources of your organization. You can create virtual environments of servers, storage devices, and network resources on a single physical server. Virtualization enhances the efficiency and productivity of the hardware resources and helps to reduce administrative costs.

This product is part of the following suites:

  • Altiris™ Server Management Suite from Symantec

Things to know Article ID Internal ID
You must enable the Hyper-V server to work with remote WMI calls.

When communicating with Hyper-V servers, the WMI protocol is used. The default firewall settings block WMI connections. You must enable Hyper-V server to work with WMI calls.

Installing the Virtual Machine Management Task Server Plug-in on separate Task Servers

For the Task Servers that are not on the same computer as the Notification Server, you must install the Microsoft VC-Redistributable package, before you can install the Virtual Machine Management Task Server Plug-in.

The Microsoft VC-Redistributable package is available at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=200b2fd9-ae1a-4a14-984d-389c36f85647&displaylang=en.

Workaround:
If the Virtual Machine Management Task Server Plug-in - Install policy has run, then you either need to re-apply it or you must manually run the package on the computer.

Known Issues in this Release

The following are known issues for this release. If additional information about an issue is available, click the Article ID link.

Issue Article ID Internal ID
Create Virtual Machine wizard provides a snapshot as an available disk for VMware.

When you create a virtual machine for VMware platform with the Create Virtual Machine wizard, the snapshots of the existing virtual machines are given as available disks on the Select Disk page.

You cannot delete virtual resources and snapshots that have special characters in their names.

You can successfully create virtual machines, virtual disks, virtual networks, and snapshots that have special characters in their names. However, if you run the delete task to delete any of these resources, the task fails and does not delete the item.

Workaround:
Do not use the following characters in the names of the virtual resources: "&", "<", ">".

Possible duplicate database entries for vCenter hosts.

If you include a vCenter as a target of a Network Discovery task, it will discover the VCenter's managed hosts. If you also include those managed hosts as direct targets of a Network Discovery task (not including the VCenter), the managed hosts will get discovered and a duplicate resource will be created in the database.

Workaround:
Discover the managed hosts that are in a vCenter environment only through the vCenter.

Virtual Machine Management portal page issues
The Virtual Machine Management portal page does not show edited data.

The Virtual Machine Management portal page does not show the edited data of your virtual resources. After you successfully perform any of the Virtual Machine Management tasks like creating a virtual machine, taking a snapshot, or deleting a virtual disk, the information on the Virtual Machine Management portal page is not updated.

Workaround:
On the Virtual Machine Management portal page, in the left pane, click the Refresh symbol to refresh the page and to see the edited data.

The data on the Virtual Machine Management portal page is not updated after you delete any virtual resources

After you manually delete virtual network, virtual disk, or snapshot on the host server, the resources are still displayed on the Virtual Machine Management portal page.

The Virtual Machine Management portal page displays a manually deleted virtual machine in the list of the virtual machines.

After you manually delete a virtual machine on the host server, it still appears on the Virtual Machine Management portal page, in the list of the virtual machines. However, if you create and run any virtual machine management tasks on this virtual machine, these tasks will fail.

Workaround:
Delete the virtual machine from All Resources:

  • In the Symantec Management Console, on the Manage menu, click All Resources.
  • On the All Resources page, in the Resources list, right-click the resource and then click Delete.

CPU Utilization Information is not displayed correctly.

When the host machine has more than one processor (Dual Core), the information about one processor is reported only and the utilization data is based on this information. Because of that, when a processor is utilized more than 50%, the Virtual Machine Management portal page shows it as a complete utilization.
