Description



Inventory for Network Devices collects information from discovered devices on your network. You can get inventory data for devices, such as routers, switches, printers, Windows, NetWare, UNIX, and Linux computers. The information from these devices is stored in the CMDB. You can use reports to analyze the inventory data.

Inventory for Network Devices is part of the following suites:

  • Altiris™ IT Management Suite from Symantec

You can now drill down on chart items in the Agentless Inventory home page to get a report of those items.

Installation and upgrade

Prerequisites

  • Notification Server 7.0 SP2  HF1
  • Network Discovery 7.0 (build 7.0.844)
  • Network Discovery Hot Fix 2 (build 7.0.847)

    New installation

    You can install this product by using the Symantec Installation Manager. You can download the installation files directly to your server or you can create offline installation packages.
    For more information, see the Symantec Management Platform Installation Guide (see knowledgebase article 45732).

    Upgrade

    You can upgrade this product from 6x versions if you run the Symantec Installation Manager on a Notification Server 6x computer. To upgrade from the 6x version, you must first upgrade your 6x Notification Server to Symantec Management Platform 7.0 or later. During the Notification Server upgrade process, you can select to upgrade to the latest version of this product.

    Data migration from 6.x

    When migrating from Inventory for Network Devices 6.x, the following data is migrated:

    All MIB files in the 6.0 NetworkInventory\Mibs directory are imported into the database during the upgrade.

    Hierarchy and replication support

    Data Mapping Tables replicate down from the parent Notification Server to the child Notification Servers.

    All discovered Agentless Inventory Resources (computers, routers, switches, etc…) replicate up to the parent Notification Server.

       
    Security and Permissions

    The Symantec Management Platform provides role-based security. The Admin role has all rights to perform all agentless inventory tasks. For other users, you can assign rights to different roles. There are four unique privileges for Inventory for Network Devices:

    Read SNMP Table: Lets you access the SNMP Table Mappings page for initial viewing.

    Import SNMP Table XML: Lets you import SNMP Table mapping definitions as .XML.

    Manage SNMP Tables: Lets you create, delete, and edit existing SNMP user tables.
    Note: Pre-defined tables cannot be edited.

    Test SNMP Table Mappings: Lets you use the test snmp functionality on the SNMP Table Mappings page.
