Managing Microsoft Windows 8 computers using Client and Server Management Suite and Symantec Management Platform 7.1 SP2

Client Management Suite, Server Management Suite, and Symantec Management Platform 7.1 SP2 were released before the release of Microsoft Windows 8. However, they do provide support for Windows 8 and Server 2012 subject to the limitations listed below. A future release will address these limitations.

The purpose of this document is to note those issues that you may encounter if managing Windows 8 or Server 2012 computers using CMS, SMS, and SMP 7.1 SP2.

Known limitations

  • The Inventory Solution Agent cannot be installed with the default install policy or a clone of the default install policy.  It can be either manually installed or scripted with a new Software Delivery policy or task.
    • You can work around this issue with the Symantec_InventoryAgent_x86.msi.
      The .msi is located on the Notification Server computer at [Install Dir]\Altiris\Notification Server\NSCap\bin\Win32\X86\Inventory\Agent Package.
      Run the MSI as administrator. Use the following command line:
      msiexec.exe /I "Symantec_InventoryAgent_x86.msi" /qn REBOOT=ReallySuppress ALLUSERS=1
  • The Underutilized Software report does not display results for Windows 8 and Server 2012 computers. Application usage data is captured and stored correctly.
  • Software Compliance reports will not properly reflect execution and compliance events for Windows 8 and Server 2012 reports.
  • The Windows 8 icon is missing or incorrect in the SMP UI.
  • You receive error code 1073741816 when you attempt to run the PowerShell Script Sample task on 64-bit Windows 8 computers. Because of this you cannot use the PowerShell script Sample task on these computers.
  • You cannot use Out of Band Management (OOBM) on Windows 8 because the support of BroadCom DASH requires an update.
  • You cannot manage printers in Resource Manager during connection to a Windows 8 platform client using Real Time System Management (RTSM).
  • You cannot run tasks on 32-bit Windows 8 computers. If you do, you will receive the error “Unable to find root node in document.”
  • Any tasks that try to create a desktop shortcut may fail on 64-bit Windows 8 computers with a policy execution timeout.
  • You cannot clear logs on Windows 8 client machines using SMA Agent diagnostics. This will affect troubleshooting the agent.
  • The Symantec Workspace Virtualization Agent is not yet supported on Windows 8.
  • Windows 8 and Server 2012 computers are not supported platforms for Site Server or Notification Server installations.
