Altiris can monitor S.M.A.R.T alerts on Dell, FSC and HP machines via their DCM, Desk View and HPCM products, however, can Altiris monitor these types of alerts on IBM hardware as it doesn't have an IBM Solution?

Please refer to the following article for an explanation of S.M.A.R.T:,_Analysis,_and_Reporting_Technology

Enabling S.M.A.R.T via the BIOS allows software applications to make use of this technology.  Most Windows operating systems can detect these alerts, however, it maybe only limited information.  If WMI can help (the required classes may need to be registered first via a tool), then our AeXCustInv.exe agent can be used to extract this data for you.

When a machine displays S.M.A.R.T alerts on boot-up, the operating system sometimes writes them to the Event Viewer Logs, which means that CustInv via VBS (enters gathered data into NSI file) or even Monitor Solution (if they are written after the Monitor Agent service is started) could be used for this scenario.

As IBM created this technology, they will most likely have a tool that allows you to benefit from it.  If this is the case, then our SWD Solution can be used to deploy and run it.

The following IBM article maybe of interest to you:  “Remote Management Agent (RMA): importance Thresholds and EAP's for POS Systems” ( provides a comparison of tools that can use this data.  Hard Disk Sentinel ( maybe the best option if you want to get the most out of this technology.

After reviewing Microsoft article "WMI Support for SMART Drives" (, the attached smart.xml custinv file has been created.  This article also provides the classes that can be used by Monitor Solution or some other method.
