Custom resources can be created by using CMDB Solution. These can be based on out of box resources, such as creating a Smart Phone custom resource based on the Cell Phone out of box resource, or be completely new and unique, such as Tablet Computers or Projectors.

The following instructions describe how to create custom resources. Other related articles are referenced, as the user also may need to create custom data classes, Data Connector Import Rules and custom reports.

  1. In an Altiris Console, click on the Configuration tab.
  2. Click to open the folders Resource Settings > Resource Types, and then click to select the resource type folder to use, such as Asset Types > User Defined.
  3. Right click on the User Defined folder and choose New > Resource Type. Note: If a custom resource is already created, select the custom resource and then skip to step 8b.
  4. In the Name field, enter a name for the custom resource. For example, Smart Phone.
  5. In the Base Resource Type field, click on the Resource link.
  6. In the Select a Resource Type window, find and click on the closest out of box resource type to what the custom resource will be modeled after. For example, Cell Phone. Note: It is not recommended to use Resource as the base resource type. This does not inherit any out of box data classes and will require the user to manually set this all up. This should only be used if the user wants complete control over every aspect of creating a custom resource.
  7. Click on the Apply button.
  8. If custom data classes are to be used:

    a. Refer to the following article to create custom data classes, or skip to step 8b if they are already created:

    b. After the custom data classes are created, click on the "Add Data Classes" button.
    c. In the Items Selector window, click to select any custom data classes to add.
    d. Click on the Apply button.

  9. Click on the custom resource's Apply button. The custom resource will now appear under Resources > Resources > Configuration Items > Asset Types > User Defined > <custom_resource_name>.
  10. Later, after the custom resource is finished being created, a custom report will need to be created to enable users to see these in the Altiris Console.

    a. Refer to the following article to create a custom report for the custom resource:

How to create a CMDB Solution 6.5 custom report that uses a custom resource and custom data classes
    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO10517

    b. After the custom report is created, click on the Resources tab.
    c. Click to open the folders Resources > Configuration Items, and then click to select the custom resource folder from under where it was placed at in step 2.
    d. Click on the Pick Reports button (top right in the Console).
    e. In the Items Selector window, click to select any custom report(s) to add.
    f. Click on the Apply button. The custom report can now be viewed using the custom resource's Show drop-down list.

  11. If data is to be imported into the custom resource and/or custom data classes:

    a. Refer to the following article to import data using a Data Connector Import Rule:

How to import data into a custom resource or custom data class using a Connector Solution 6.5 Import Rule
    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO10506

    b. Once the data is imported, this should appear in where the user has placed the custom resource (step 2) or in the out of box resource where the custom data class was added to.
