Monitor Solution for Altiris Infrastructure

Altiris Monitor Solution 6.0 Product Guide
Product: Monitor Solution for Altiris Infrastructure Version 6.0 SP2

Monitor Solution for Altiris Infrastructure lets you increase the availability and monitor the "health" of Altiris infrastructure components. To do this, the solution monitors key elements of these infrastructure computers, such as processor utilization, disk usage, database performance, and errors generated. When potential problems arise, automated actions can be taken to alert you through generating an SNMP trap, sending an e-mail, running a command, and creating an Alert Manager incident.

Monitor Solution for Altiris Infrastructure lets you monitor the following components of the Altiris infrastructure:

  • Notification Servers
  • Package Servers
  • Recovery Servers

Notification Server includes numerous predefined reports that can help you analyze the performance of your Notification Servers. These reports provide aggregated Notification Server data, such as the amount of time spent processing events, the number of requests handled, and the number of packages deployed. Monitor Solution for Altiris Infrastructure extends the information provided by Notification Server reports. Monitor Solution for Altiris Infrastructure reports provide information on the utilization of the server, such as disk usage, processor utilization, Notification Server queue length, and error counts. Monitor Solution also lets you determine the utilization of a resource at a particular time. Example: if there are times when your server is maximizing the use of the processor or memory. This feature lets you more effectively use the resources available. Example: if you discover through using Monitor Solution for Altiris Infrastructure that processor utilization is maximized during data importing, you can change the import parameters and use Monitor Solution for Altiris Infrastructure to evaluate the impact of the change to the processor.

Recovery Solution is a critical backup and restore component that helps protect the information resources on remote computers. Monitor Solution for Altiris Infrastructure provides an additional level of protection for users by monitoring the health and performance of the Recovery Solution servers and clusters.

Monitor Solution for Altiris Infrastructure provides monitoring functions for the supported Altiris infrastructure servers. Specifically, you can monitor and manage various elements of your Notification Server, Package Server, and Recovery Solution Server environment, including:

  • .NET services
  • Notification Database
  • Disks
  • IIS
  • Processes
  • Notification Server event queues
  • Notification Server log files
  • Recovery Solution Server critical and non-critical errors
  • Recovery Solution Server database connections
  • Recovery Solution Server raw storage

Important: If you are using Monitor Solution for Altiris Infrastructure and no other Monitor Solution that is purchased and licensed, you can use but cannot create or edit metrics. After a purchased and licensed Monitor Solution is installed, you will be able to create and edit metrics.

Note! Currently, Monitor Solution for Altiris Infrastructure is a free solution, but if you want to use it after the initial evaluation period, you must register it.

Monitor Solution for Altiris Infrastructure Requirements

The following are the requirements for the solution:

  • Altiris Notification Server Version 6.0 SP2
  • Altiris Monitor Solution Core 6.0 SP1

The following are the requirements for the monitored computer functioning as a Notification Server:

  • Altiris Notification Server Version 6.0 SP2 (or later)

The following are the requirements for the monitored computer functioning as a Package Server (these are Package Server requirements):

  • Windows NT 4.0 with SP 3 (or later), Windows 2000 with SP2 (or later), Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003 operating system
  • Altiris Agent Version 6.0 (or later)

The following are the requirements for the monitored computer functioning as a Recovery Server:

  • Altiris Agent Version 6.0 (or later)
  • Altiris Recovery Solution Version 6.1 (or later)

Important: If Monitor Solution for Altiris Infrastructure is installed before Recovery Solution, you must manually specify a collection to which the Recovery Solution—Basic monitor pack applies. If Recovery Solution is installed first, the monitor pack will automatically be assigned to the Computers with Recovery Solution Server installed collection.

Monitor Solution for Altiris Infrastructure Setup

Monitor Solution for Altiris Infrastructure includes policies for deploying the special agents used by the rules for monitoring Altiris infrastructure components. If these agents are not deployed, you cannot get all of the monitoring data available from this solution. By default, these policies are disabled, and you must enable them.

To deploy the Monitor Solution for Altiris Infrastructure agents
  1. In the Altiris Console, click the Configuration tab.
  2. In the treeview pane, click Configuration > Solution Settings > Monitoring > Monitor Solution > Altiris > ...
    • Notification Server > Metric Provider Rollout > Notification Server Monitor Metric Installation to deploy a WMI provider that processes data on Notification Server packages on the Notification Server
    • Package Server > Metric Provider Rollout > Package Server WMI Provider Installation to deploy a WMI provider that processes data on Notification Server packages on the Package Server.
  3. In the content pane, select the Enable checkbox.
  4. Make any needed changes to configure the deployment of the agents.
  5. In the treeview pane, click Configuration > Solution Settings > Monitoring > Monitor Solution > Windows > Windows Monitor Agent Rollout > Windows Monitor Agent Installation for Package Servers.
  6. In the content pane, select the Enable checkbox.

This installs the Windows Monitor Agent on all Package Server computers that might not already have the agent installed. Example: Windows XP computers that are not servers, so the standard agent installation policy will not install the agent on them, but can function as Package Servers.
  7. Click the Apply button.
