The following best practices can help ensure the effective operation of Symantec Online Storage for Backup Exec:
Use Symantec Online Storage for Backup Exec for the small jobs that contain your most critical data. Symantec Online Storage for Backup Exec is not intended to replace your complete local backup process. You may find that it takes longer to run jobs over the Internet than it does to run them locally. Also, since you pay for the storage space that you use, backing up only your critical data is the most cost-effective use of this service.
The most efficient way to use Symantec Online Storage is to run the same duplicate backup job periodically. You can create a policy and run te job according to a schedule. After the first time you run a job, Symantec Online Storage for Backup Exec examines the backup data in subsequent occurrences of that job. Any data that is unchanged from the previous occurrences is skipped. Subsequent backups include only the files that have changed since the last occurrence. This process reduces the amount of time and bandwidth that is required to run recurring backup jobs.
Ensure that the "Verify after backup completes" option on the General pane of the Backup Job Properties is not selected when you create duplicate backup jobs for Symantec Online Storage for Backup Exec. Symantec Online Storage for Backup Exec automatically verifies duplicate backup jobs, so it is not necessary for Backup Exec to also verify completed jobs. If you enable Backup Exec to verify jobs, the amount of time that is required to run duplicate backup jobs can increase significantly.
