Best practices for Backup Exec 2010 Agent for Microsoft SharePoint

Best practices include tips and recommendations to help you effectively use Backup Exec 2010 Agent for Microsoft SharePoint (SharePoint Agent). For more information about the SharePoint Agent, see the Backup Exec 2010 Administrator's Guide.

The following best practices help you use the Agent for Microsoft SharePoint effectively:

  • Use an account with local administrative privileges for each member of the SharePoint farm for SharePoint backup and restore jobs.

  • Make SharePoint backup selections from the appropriate farm under Microsoft SharePoint Server Farms, rather than from the individual SharePoint servers. Microsoft SharePoint Server Farms represents the entire farm topology in your environment, which includes all of the SharePoint resources that reside on a single computer. When you select Microsoft SharePoint Server Farms, you ensure that you select all available SharePoint resources for backup.

  • Use the Backup Exec SQL Agent, in addition to the SharePoint farm resources, to back up the default Microsoft SQL Server databases for instances on which SharePoint data resides. Back up the master, model, and msdb databases to fully protect each SQL instance for disaster recovery purposes.

  • Keep a record of all service packs and hotfixes that are installed on the SharePoint server when you perform backups. SharePoint restore jobs may not complete successfully if the databases were backed up with different patch levels.

  • Perform full system backups of the SharePoint servers, including System State, system volume, and any other volumes that contain SharePoint-related files and folders. When you make full system backups, you fully protect the entire SharePoint environment.

  • Ensure Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) is enabled before you run backups if you intend to be able to restore individual items. You can enable GRT for all SharePoint jobs in Tools > Options. Or you can enable GRT for individual jobs on the Backup Job Properties dialog.

  • Back up your current or most recent GRT-enabled backup jobs to disk. It is more convenient to work with GRT-enabled jobs on the volumes that do not have file size limitations. You can create duplicate backup jobs and send copies of your backups to tape for archival purposes. See the Administrator's Guide for more information about the recommended devices for your GRT-enabled backup jobs.

  • Create a copy of your GRT-enabled backups on disk instead of performing multiple restore jobs from a backup on tape. Perform the restore jobs from the disk instead of the tape for best results.
