Question
How to troubleshoot Carbon Copy connection problems?

Answer

Steps to troubleshoot Carbon Copy connection problems:

  1. Try Connecting to the problematic machine not with the machine name but with the machines IP address. If this fails follow the next steps.
  2. In the Resources right-click on the machine you are trying to connect to and check if the “Asset Status” is “Active”; if it is not active, then you would not be able to connect to it.
  3. On the machine you are trying to connect to, type into the command line “netstat -an”.
  4. This will show the listening ports on the machine; Carbon Copy uses port 1680.
  5. If this port is open then type into the command line “telnet IP 1680
    • If you get the message; access denied; then a firewall is active.
    • If you get the message; can not connect, please try one of the other LISTENING ports from the “netstat -an”; if telnet fails to connect on this machine try the same steps on another machine, but it will probably be a network problem if this fails.
  6. Make sure you are using a back slash between domain and user and not a forward:  domain\user
