Question
How do I move the Deployment Server Database from one MSDE to another MSDE?

Answer

The following instructions assume a Default installation of MSDE and Deployment Server. If your install is not Default, you will need to replace eXpress and C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Data with the name and location of your database.

  1. On Server 1, stop all of the Deployment Server Services.
  2. On Server 1, run the following in the command prompt:

OSQL -E -Q "USE eXpress DELETE FROM mmsettings"
  3. On Server 1, run the following in the command prompt:

OSQL -E -Q "USE master EXEC sp_detach_db 'eXpress'"
  4. Copy eXpress.mdf from Server 1 to Server 2. (The default location of this file is C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Data.)
  5. On Server 2, stop all of the Deployment Server Services.
  6. On Server 2, run the following in the command prompt:

    OSQL -E -Q "USE master EXEC sp_attach_db 'eXpress', 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Data\eXpress.mdf'"
  7. Edit \\<YourServer>\eXpress\default.cfg and change SQLDatabaseName to the name of your new SQL Server.
  8. Open ODBC Data Source Administrator on your Deployment Server and all computers running the remote console and change the System DSN Altiris eXpress Database to point to your new SQL Server.
  9. Restart Server 2, or start all of the Deployment Server Services.
