Best Practices: Installing Scan Engine 5.2.x on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.x

This document contains best practices and recommendations by Symantec to install Scan Engine 5.2.x on a RedHat Enterprise Linux OS (RHEL).
A) Create a user system account with the necessary permissions to start Scan Engine
You can create an account by logging in as “root” on your RHEL and type the following command:
# useradd -r -m -n sseaccount
Note: “-r” creates the user as a system account, “-m” creates the user’s home directory automatically, “-n” does not create a group.
You can then assign the account you just created to the “root” group by typing the following command:
# usermod -g root sseaccount
B) Install pre-required software packages for Scan Engine
In order to successfully install Scan Engine on your RHEL system you will first need to install some required software packages.
These packages are: “sharutils”, “glibc” and “initscripts” and can be found on the RHEL CDs
Below is an example of the command used to install the “sharutils” package from the RHEL CD (already mounted):
# rpm -ivh /path/to/cdmount/server/sharutils*.rpm
Please also note that the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.5 or 1.6 is required on the system before installing Scan Engine. You will find the JRE installation files on the Scan Engine ISO image or ZIP archive.
C) Installing Symantec Scan Engine (SSE)
The steps below should guide you through the main setup process of Scan Engine:
1. Obtain the Scan Engine installation package (ZIP or ISO) from Symantec’s FileConnect website
2. Extract the ZIP package or mount/burn the ISO image on your system
3. Ensure all required packages are installed on the system.
4. Ensure the main target directory exists on your server (such as /opt for default installations)
5. To start the setup, browse to the installation folder containing Scan Engine for RedHat and type the following command:
6. Accept all terms and agreement
7. Enter the installation directory for Scan Engine only if the default path is not ok, otherwise press ENTER (“/opt/SYMCScan” is the default path).
8. When asked to “run as root”, answer “n” for No and enter the user account you created at the step “A”.
9. Accept the default web admin port: “8004” and SSL: “8005”
10. Enter a password to access the web interface.
Your Scan Engine setup is now complete.
D) Post-installation steps and licensing
You can confirm a successful installation of Scan Engine by typing the following commands:
# ps -ef | grep symc
(will check whether the “symcscan” process is running )
Additional messages during installation can be found in the file: /var/log/SYMCScan-install.log
You can then access the web admin interface by opening the following URL on your browser: https://<scan engine address>:8004
After logging in, you must enter a valid license for the product to work.
