Welcome to the NetBackup Support Screencast Demo Video series.
 
These videos deliver how to demonstrations in a variety of NetBackup functions.
 
They assume fundamental NetBackup knowledge.

This video is Configuring Public Folder Item Backups for Exchange 2003 and 2007 using NetBackup 6.5 and 7.0
 
For the purposes of this demonstration, we will be using a master/media server that is running NetBackup 7.0.1 on Windows 2003 R2 SP2. The client is running Exchange 2003 client with NetBackup 7.0.1 with Windows 2003 R2 SP2 as well. The client is not clustered. Although we will be using NetBackup 7.0.1, the interface and configuration settings are the same for NetBackup 6.5, as well as for Exchange 2007, so the information presented here can be applied to a NetBackup 6.5 environment as well as an Exchange server running Exchange 2007.
 
This video does not apply to:
Exchange 2010
 
Please also note that the type of backup covered in this demonstration is separate from the Information Store backup, and it is strongly recommended that the Exchange Information Store backup and public folder item not be run at the same time.
 
Service Permissions
By default, the NetBackup Client Service uses Local System as the account with which to log on. A different account is required on the client systems to perform backups or restores of individual public folder items and folders. We will need to change the service account to a Windows domain account that was previously created. This account must have local administrative privileges on the client system, as well as top-level administrative rights in Exchange. For this example, the Exchange 2003 server has been configured so that the NetBackup Client Service is running as a service account called "netbackup".
 
Client Settings
We also need to make sure the clients are configured with the service account mailbox. In the NetBackup administration console on the master server, we click on Clients under Host Properties. We will need to check these settings on each client and cluster node. 
 
We double click on the Exchange 2003 client to bring up the Client Properties dialog. We expand the Windows Client settings and click on Exchange. Under Mailbox for message level backup and restore, we will enter the name of the service account mailbox. 
 
There is also a setting for Enable single instance backup for message attachments. Enabling this feature will cause NetBackup to write only one copy of an item attachment to the backup. For this example, we will leave the setting unchecked.
 
We click OK to save those settings.
 
Public Folder Permissions
It is also important to note that Public Folders have their own special permissions. We can check these permissions via the Exchange System Manager on the Exchange 2003 server. We open the System Manager, then drill down into Administrative Groups, then the administrative group our Exchange server is in, then Servers, then the Exchange server that we are backing up, then the Storage Group that contains the Public Folder database, and then Public Folders. On the right-hand side, we right-click on the specific folder, and choose Properties. In the Properties dialog, we click on the Permissions tab and then click on Client permissions. In the Client Permissions dialog, we need to make sure the service account we are using has adequate permissions. For backing up the Public Folders, Reviewer is needed, but to restore a Public Folder item, a minimum permission level of Publishing Editor is needed. For this example, our service account has Owner permissions, which is the highest possible permission level.
 
Policy Configuration
Now we will go ahead and configure a policy for the individual Public Folder item backup of the Exchange 2003 client. We will bring up the NetBackup administration console, right click on Policies, and choose New Policy. This will bring up the Add a New Policy dialog and we will use "Exchange_Public_Folder_backup" as the policy name. We are going to keep the option to use the wizard unchecked, and click OK. This will bring up the Add New Policy window where we will configure the new policy.
 
We will start with the Attributes tab. We choose MS-Exchange-Server under the Policy type. Under the Policy storage (or Policy storage unit/lifecycle policy for NetBackup 6.5) drop down, we will choose "DSU" for the Disk Storage Unit that had been configured earlier for this example. 
 
We will leave the option for Allow multiple data streams unchecked. And we will also leave the Perform snapshot backups option unchecked under the Snapshot Client portion of the dialog, as snapshot-ing is not used for this type of backup.
 
Next we will click on the Schedules tab to create the appropriate schedule for a full backup. We click the New button to bring up the Add New Schedule window. Under Name we are going to use "Full" as the name of this schedule. Under the Type of backup, we will leave the Full Backup type. The four backup types are as follows:
 
Full Backup - which backs up all items and folders for Public Folders;
 
Differential Incremental Backup - which backs up changes in the items and folders for Public Folders since the last full or differential backup;
 
Cumulative Incremental Backup - which also backs up changes in the items and folders for Public Folders but only since the last full backup; and
 
User Backup - which will allow an Exchange backup to be initiated from the client during an open Start Window. 
 
We will leave the rest of the settings at their default, and will not be configuring a Start Window for the Full Backup schedule since we will be running the backup manually for this example. Both the Start Window and Exclude Dates settings do not need any Exchange specific settings, so those will not be covered further. Now we will click OK to save the Schedule settings.
 
Now we will click on the Clients tab to add the Exchange 2003 client to the policy. We click on New and then enter the client name. The Exchange 2003 stand alone server is configured as the same host name as the Windows 2003 server it is running on, so we will use that host name here. After we enter the host name, we hit the Enter key on the keyboard, and the Hardware and Operating System columns are automatically populated. 
 
If the Exchange server were running on a cluster, it would be important to remember to use the clustered Exchange 2003 virtual host name, and not the host name of the active cluster node it is running on. If the node name were used instead of the virtual host name, NetBackup would use the node name when talking to the Exchange backup API. Since there would be no Exchange 2003 server configured using the node name, the Exchange 2003 server would not be found and the backup would fail.
 
Next we will click on the Backup Selections tab to configure the backup selection for the policy. We will click the New button to enter a backup selection, and then the button at the very right of the backup selection that looks like a hand pointing to the right. This will bring up the Select Directive dialog. Under the Directive set drop down we will choose the MS_Exchange_Public_Folders setting, and under the Directive drop down we will choose Microsoft Exchange Public Folders:, and then click OK.
 
Running the Backup
With the policy created, it is time to run the backup. We right click on the policy, and choose Manual Backup which brings up the Manual Backup dialog. Now we click OK to start the backup, and OK again for the popup notification that the backup has started. We click on Activity Monitor and can see the backup job starting and running. And here we see the backup job has completed successfully with a blue man and a status 0. 
 
Please note that it is not unusual for an individual Public Folder item backup to exit with a status 1. Depending on the state of a particular Public Folder item at the time of the backup, the item may be busy and may not be able to be read. When this occurs, the item is skipped and the backup result is a status 1.
 
Any final status other than 0 or 1 should be considered an unsuccessful Exchange backup and the cause should be investigated. Such a backup cannot be relied upon for a restore.
