TRANSCRIPT OF VIDEO:

Welcome to the NetBackup Support Screencast Demo Video series.

These videos deliver how to demonstrations in a variety of NetBackup functions.

They assume fundamental NetBackup knowledge.

If you need basic NetBackup training, please go to http://education.symantec.com where you will be able to find a listing of instructor-led classroom training as well as self-paced computer-based courses for NetBackup.

This video is Installing the NetBackup 6.5 Client on Windows.

For this demonstration, we will be installing a NetBackup 6.5 client, running on Windows 2003 R2. The information in this demo can also be applied to all supported versions of Windows under NetBackup 6.5.

This video does not apply to:
Non-Windows Platforms
NetBackup versions other than 6.5

It does not cover how to apply patches.

Also, please check the NetBackup compatibility lists to confirm support for the specifics of your system.

The NetBackup client installation media can either be a downloaded package, or CD-ROM. For this demonstration, we will be using a CD-ROM. If we were using a downloaded package, we would want to make sure the install files were made available to the client machine we are installing the NetBackup client on.

The NetBackup 6.5 download can be obtained via Fileconnect at http://fileconnect.symantec.com.

First, we make sure that the NetBackup install media is loaded in the CD-ROM drive of the machine. If the NetBackup 6.5 Main Menu does not come up automatically, we can open 'My Computer' and double-click on the CD-ROM drive icon.

Either the NetBackup 6.5 Main Menu will launch, or Windows Explorer will open for the CD-ROM contents. If a Windows Explorer window had opened for the CD-ROM contents, then we would double click on 'Launch.bat' to launch the NetBackup 6.5 Main Menu.

In the Main Menu, we click on 'NetBackup Installation'. On the next menu, we click on 'Install Client Software'. This will launch the client install process, which starts with the 'Welcome' screen. We click 'Next' to continue to the 'License' screen. Please review the contents of the license agreement and if you agree with the contents, click the radio button to accept the terms of the license agreement and then click Next.

On the 'Install Choice' screen, we can choose to either install to the local computer or install to other computers on the network; as well as choose a 'Typical' or 'Custom' install. We leave the defaults and click 'Next'. On the 'System Names' screen, we can set the 'Client Name', which is normally automatically populated, the 'Master Server', and 'Additional Servers''Additional Servers' are usually other stand alone NetBackup media servers in the NetBackup environment. We can configure them here, to make sure those media servers have permission to back up this particular client. Additional NetBackup media servers can be added later, however. NetBackup 6.5 also automatically populates 'Additional Servers' with the client name. The client name is typically not needed in this capacity, so we will delete it. We will configure the master server, and one additional media server.

There is also the option to install the NetBackup LiveUpdate agent. If we were using NetBackup LiveUpdate, we would configure the client options here. For this example, we will uncheck the LiveUpdate agent option, and click 'Next' to continue. On the 'Install' screen, we click 'Install' to begin the NetBackup client installation. Depending on your particular client, the client installation can take several minutes to complete.

Once the install finishes, we see a screen that has a message that a reboot is needed for the Veritas Snapshot Provider (VSP) to be enabled. For Windows XP and 2003, the Microsoft VSS framework is also available for backup snapshot functions. For versions of Windows higher than XP and 2003, VSP is no longer supported.

We click 'Finish' to exit the client install dialog, and then click 'Exit' to exit the NetBackup 6.5 installation menu.

We click on the Windows 'Start' menu, then 'All Programs', to see the 'Veritas NetBackup' program group created from the NetBackup client install. This client installation is now complete.
