The information in this video can be applied to Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2007 environments where there is one database per Storage Group and all Exchange 2010 environments with NetBackup 7.0 as well as NetBackup 6.5. This video also assumes prior knowledge of how to configure an Exchange backup in NetBackup.
 
Exclude lists for Exchange backups only work correctly for mailbox item and Public Folder item backups. For Exchange database backups, snapshot backups ignore exclude lists completely. Streaming backups process the worklist in such a way that on offline database that is on an exclude list will result in a status 1, or 71 if it is the only database in the backup using multiple streams.
 
Excluding Specific Storage Groups from a Backup
The recommended method to configure the backup selection in an Exchange database backup policy is to list each Storage Group separately, leaving out the Storage Group meant to be excluded. For example, there are three Exchange databases; "Admin Mailbox Storage Group", "User Mailbox Storage Group", and "Migration Mailbox Storage Group". If we want to exclude "Migration Mailbox Storage Group", we enter "Admin Mailbox Storage Group", and "User Mailbox Storage Group" in the backup selection of the policy, but leave out "Migration Mailbox Storage Group".
 
Using Wildcards in Storage Group Names to Make a Policy File List Shorter
To make it easier to manage the backup selection list, one can use an asterisk wildcard to group together Storage Groups with common naming conventions. For example, all of the production Exchange databases start with MailboxSG, as in "MailboxSG North" and "MailboxSG South". There is also a database for testing called "TestDB". It is not unusual for the "TestDB" to be dismounted, so we want to exclude the Test Storage Group from the backup. In order to backup only the production databases, the backup selection would be "Microsoft Information Store:\MailboxSG*". This would back up all the production exchange Storage Groups starting with MailboxSG and would exclude backing up the Test Storage Group.
 
DAG Backups and Wildcards
For Exchange 2010 DAG backups with NetBackup 7.0 and 7.0.1, the DAG directive does not support using wildcards. However, NetBackup 7.1 allows for wildcards with DAG Backups. For versions 7.0 and 7.0.1 DAG backups, it is necessary to list the databases separately in the Backup selection.
 
Excluding Exchange Log Files from File System Backups
It is not unusual for many environments to exclude Exchange files from their file system backups. This would include database files and log files. However, global exclude lists can also apply to some Exchange policies. Thus, if a global exclude list incorporates items such as *.log, this will cause Exchange policies to exclude these files, which would result in not backing up transaction log files.
 
The recommended solution to this would be to have any exclude lists on Exchange clients which exclude Exchange files be configured so that they apply only to specific non-Exchange policies.
 
To create an exclude list, click on the plus next to host properties and then click on Clients. Then double-click on the client hostname of the client for which you want to create an exclude list. Expand the Windows Client options if it is not already expanded and click on Exclude Lists. To create an exclude list, then, click Add. You will need to specify the policy name of the policy that this exclude list applies to. Then, you can exclude *.log to exclude log files from the file system backup. Hit Add to add the policy and then close. Click OK to close your client properties.
