There are several different log files in Deployment Solution 7.1, varying depending on the activity being tracked.  Furthermore, there are additional optional logs that can be activated for more information.  This document is provided as reference for the use and location* of these log files.

(*Note: File locations provided are for default installations, and paths for modified install locations will vary accordingly)

 

Basic Logs:

Log: NS Server Logs
Function: These logs only exist on the Notification Server, and are basic logs for tracking all NS activity.  Information from various modules, including the Altiris Service, Task Services, and IIS are included in this log file.  The most current file will be called "a.log", with progressively older files being labeled with an appended number in the following format: "aXX.log".  This is one of the logs displayed in the Altiris Log Viewer.
Location: "C:\Program Files\Altiris\Notification Server\Logs"

Log: NS Agent Logs
Function: These logs will exist on all managed machines; the Notification Server, Site Servers, and clients will all have them.  This log tracks activity specific to this client, including Job/Task execution, server communication, and internal agent activity.  The most current file will be called "Agent.log", with progressively older files being labeled with an appended number in the following format: "AgentXX.log".  This is one of the logs displayed in the Altiris Log Viewer.
Location: "C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Logs\"

Log: Task History Logs
Function: This is a history of the Tasks specific to the managed machine from which it is taken.  This is the information displayed when clicking the 'Task History' button on the Symantec Management Agent UI.
Location: "C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\TaskManagement\statusXml\History\"

 

Symantec Boot Service (PXE) Logs:

¹Most of these logs need to be enabled by creating keys in the Registry.  This can be done by following the instructions in HOWTO21719.
²This log needs to be enabled by following the instructions in HOWTO26070.

Log: pxestartupinfo
Function: This captures information from the PXE services as they initialize
Location: "C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Agents\Deployment\Task Handler\SBS\" & "C:\Windows\System32\"

Log: PXE Service Logs¹
Function: Records the activities and actions performed by the PXE services.
Location: "C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Agents\Deployment\Task Handler\SBS\"

Log: SbsNSInterface²
Function: Further records the activity and communication of the '_Symantec_netBoot_Interface' service.
Location: "<Path Specified in Registry Key>"

 

Deployment Process Logs:

²These logs need to be enabled by creating keys in the Registry.  This can be done by following the instructions in HOWTO26070.

Log: Task-Specific Logs²
Function: These logs track the activity of specific tasks, and are named according the the specific task for which they are recording information.  These can be enabled on any managed machine, and will record task performed on that machine.
Location: <Path Specified in Registry Key>

 

Automation Client Logs:

These logs will be on a client machine that is booted into an automation environment, either via PXE or Automation Folder.

Logs: Agent Logs & Task-Specific Logs (WinPE)
Function: The Agent.log and PECTAgent.log record the processes and operations performed by the automation agent in WinPE.  The remaining logs will be named according to the Task for which they record information.
Location: "X:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Logs\"

Logs: Agent Logs & Task-Specific Logs (Linux)
Function: The aex-client.log and DSPluginInit.log record the processes and operations performed by the automation agent in Linux.  The remaining logs will be named according to the Task for which they record information.
Location: "/opt/altiris/notification/nsagent/var"

 

Imaging Tool Logs:

Logs: Ghost Imaging Logs
Function: Records any failures that occur during use of the Ghost imaging tool.
Location: "C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Agents\Deployment\Task Handler\ghost\ghDplyAw32.txt"

Logs: RDeploy Log
Function: Records any failures that occur during use of the Ghost imaging tool.
Location: "C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Agents\Deployment\Task Handler\rdeploy\rdeploy.txt"

 

Task Server Logs

These logs will be located on Remote Site Servers with the Task Service installed.

Logs: Task Management Log
Function: Records the activities and functions of the Remote Task Server
Location: "C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Client Task Server\logs\taskmanagement.log"
