Client name selection parameter

This NetBackup policy parameter applies to the VMware snapshot method. NetBackup uses the VMware snapshot method to back up virtual machines.

Client name selection specifies the type of name by which NetBackup recognizes a virtual machine.

VM hostname

The network host name for the virtual machine. (This option is the default.) NetBackup obtains the host name by means of a reverse lookup on the virtual machine's IP address. If no host name can be found, the IP address is used as the host name.

VMware display name

The name of the virtual machine as displayed in the VMware interface. For example, you provide a display name to the virtual machine when the virtual machine is created.

Note the following:

VMware UUID

The unique ID assigned to the virtual machine when the virtual machine was created.

VM DNS Name

The VMware "DNS Name" of the virtual machine. In vSphere Client, this name appears on the virtual machine's Summary tab.

Note:

This name may or may not be associated with the virtual machine's IP address. VMware Tools obtains this name from the host name that is configured in the virtual machine. For further information on this name, refer to the documentation for the guest operating system.

A change to the Client Name Selection value can affect backups, depending on how the policy is configured on the Clients tab. Refer to the following topics for more information:

See Client Name Selection parameter and manual selection of virtual machines.

See Effect of Client name selection parameter on Selection column in Test Query results.

Note:

When creating virtual machines, use the same name for both host name and display name. If the Client Name Selection is changed, the existing entries on the Clients tab still work.
