Problem

They are creating a Security Role for Asset management. The user that belongs to that role has access to all the different resources in the Notification Server but when this user goes to Resources Tab/Resources gets the following error:

Server Error in '/Altiris/AssetContractCommon' Application.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Access Denied.
Description: An error occurred while accessing the resources required to serve this request. You might not have permissions to view the requested resources.

Error message 401.3: You don't have permissions to view this directory or page using the credentials you supplied (access denied due to ACLs). Ask the Web server's administrator to give you access.

When the user tries to go to the different folders under the Resources Tab/Resources (some like Asset Types, Contract Types, or Financial Types), a login window appears asking to authenticate the user and when you add the username and password seems to be not authenticating properly and then after few tries to authenticate errors like this one appeared:

Server Error in '/Altiris/AssetContractCommon' Application.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Access is denied.
Description: An error occurred while accessing the resources required to serve this request. You might not have permission to view the requested resources.

Error message 401.3: You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials you supplied (access denied due to ACLs). Ask the Web server's administrator to give you access to 'F:\Program Files\Altiris\AssetContractCommon\Web\AssetListPage.aspx'.

Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:1.1.4322.2300; ASP.NET Version:1.1.4322.2300

Environment
Notification Server 6.0.6074 SP3

Cause
We found out that he was missing the Users group in the Security options for the C:\Program Files\Altiris\Asset Contract Common folder. As soon as we added Users group, the user added to the Asset Management Role started working without having to authenticate in every single option in the Resources Tab\Resources.

Resolution
1. Try to compare the Security permissions from another Notification Server that don't have this issue and make sure that you have the same Groups/Roles added to complaining folder. In this case, we found out that the customer was missing the Users group in the Security options for the C:\Program Files\Altiris\Asset Contract Common folder. As soon as we added Users group, the user that was part of the Asset Management Role started working without having to authenticate in every single option in the Resources Tab\Resources.

2. Make sure that any other subfolder is not missing Groups/Roles on them. There were another folders under Altiris folder that were missing the Users group. We suggested to the customer to add Users group to the C:\Program Files\Altiris folder so it can be propagated down to all the subfolders under Altiris directory.
