This article provides information regarding the update that provides support for Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion).

General Information

The attached hotfix is intended to be installed on top of the Symantec Management Platoform (SMP) 7.1 SP1 product. It will add a new entry for SMP 7.1 SP1 HF1. The existence of 7.1 SP1 will be checked as a prerequisite during the installation phase. SMP 7.1 SP1 HF1 will be configured as a separate NS product and will be visible in the software portal to give a clear indication that it is installed. The original SMP 7.1 SP1 version will remain installed as well. The Version of all new binaries is 7.1.6855.

The functionality provided by this hotfix will be included in any future releases to the SMP, i.e., SMP 7.1 SP2.

This hotfix will update the SMP Agent for Mac, Inventory Solution for Mac and Software Management Solution for Mac. Patch for Mac is not affected by the Lion upgrade so no changes were needed. pcAnywhere for mac is not yet support on Mac OS X 10.7.

 Platforms covered:

This hotfix applies to the following Agent OSes:

·       MAC 10.7

·       MAC 10.7 Server

Important Note:

Symantec has released this hotfix (HOWTO58968) and a separate point fix (HOWTO59147). This hotfix provides support for OS X 10.7. The point fix provides for improved resource key processing and resource merging. This hotfix should be installed BEFORE the point fix for Resources Merging. If installed after, it will overwrite the point fix files and they  will need to re-installed again.

What is updated?

·        All Mac related packages and scripts were reworked to support install/uninstall on MacOS 10.7.

·        Enabled push-install agent to MacOS 10.7.

·        Added “Mac OS X 10.7” filter.

·        Added “Mac OS X Server 10.7” filter.

·        Modified “Mac Servers” and “Mac Desktops” filters to include newly added Mac 10.7 filters.

·        Modified “Legacy UNIX/Linux/Mac Computers” filter to exclude newly added Mac 10.7 filters.

How to Install

Download the attached zip file to the NS server, or a directory available to the NS server, and uncompress it. It will uncompress two files and three directories, each with its own set of files. There are four steps to installing this hotfix. Please following each step for a complete installation. Failure to do so could result in a non-functioning system or other errors on the NS/SMP and on client resources.

Note: This  is intended to be installed outside Symantec Installation Manager.

Step 1: How to Install the SMP Agent Update

1.     Locate install.cmd and click OK.

2.     Follow installer instructions.

Note that the install.cmd file simply pauses the NS server, stops various Altiris services, and runs msiexec on the installer.

To Uninstall  the SMP Agent Update

This SMP 7.1 SP1 HF1 hotfix can be rolled-back (uninstalled) by following these steps:

1.     From a command prompt, run: msiexec /x 338F1A94-FEBF-4479-BFC0-DB0C1DFD1D10 skipaim=1

2.     From the  the Symantec Installation Manager, repair and reconfigure SMP 7.1 SP1

The latter step is significant as it restores modified items to original state.

Step 2: How to Install the Inventory Solution Components

1.     Make a backup of the files in the <NS_Install_Location>\ Altiris\Notification Server\NSCap\bin\UNIX\Inventory\Mac\universal directory.

2.     Copy the files in the InventorySolution.MacOS directory of the uncompressed file to the <NS_Install_Location>\ Altiris\Notification Server\NSCap\bin\UNIX\Inventory\Mac\universal directory on the NS server. Overwrite the existing files.

3.     To Uninstall, copy the original files back to the above location overwriting the existing files. See the Known issues section, item #4 for information on uninstalling the upgraded solution from the client machines.

Step 3: How to Install the Software Management Solution Components

1.     Make a backup of the files in the <NS_Install_Location>\ Altiris\Notification Server\NSCap\bin\UNIX\Software Management\Mac\universal directory.

2.     Copy the files in the SoftwareManagementSolution.MacOS directory of the uncompressed file to the <NS_Install_Location>\ Altiris\Notification Server\NSCap\bin\UNIX\ Software Management\Mac\universal directory on the NS server. Overwrite the existing files.

4.   The following scheduled tasks must run in order for the package to download to client systems: NS.Package.Refresh (automatically runs at 3:30 AM daily) and NS.Package.Distribution Point Update Schedule Task (automatically runs every 10 minutes). You can manually run these via Control Panel on the NS/SMP server, if you wish. If this has not occurred prior to the client downloading the package, a size mismatch error may occur.

3.     To Uninstall, copy the original files back to the above location overwriting the existing files. See the Known issues section, item #4 for information on uninstalling the upgraded solution from the client machines.

Step 4: How to Install the additional Reports

1.     Go to Reports - Discovery and Inventory - Inventory - Unix/Linux/Mac - Upgrade Analysis.

2.     Right click on Upgrade Analysis and click on ‘Import’.

3.     One window pop ups, asking for ‘Choose the XML file to Import’. Then select both the xml files in the InventorySolution.MacOS_10.7_reports directory of the uncompressed file one by one and click on ‘Open’ button.

4.     The reports will install to the ‘Upgrade Analysis’ folder. They are ‘Systems with Mac OS X 10.7 Capable Hardware’ and ‘Systems Not Mac OS X 10.7 Capable’.

5.     To uninstall, right-click on the above reports in the left-hand menu tree and select ‘delete’.

Additional Notes

Note, that upgrade policy is not going to be changed. So, installation of 7.1 SP1 HF1 will not force upgrade for already existing agents. Only new installations will be affected.

Upgrade to 7.1 SP2 should take into account this hot fix. I.e. product will support following upgrade path 7.1 SP1 HF1 -> 7.1 SP2

Known Issues:

1.     This Hot Fix doesn’t include pcAnyware support for Mac OS X 10.7

2.     Uninstall of ULM Agent 7.1 SP1 on Mac 10.7 (in case 10.6 Mac with installed agent vs. 7.1 SP1 was upgraded to 10.7) does not work. Uninstall can be performed after agent upgrade to HF version or you can use repair_script.sh script (available in the PointFix folder) to recreate missed files, that prevents agent from uninstall.

If on such machine in addition to Agent some solution plugins were installed, user should run repair_script.sh script (available in the PointFix folder) even after upgrade in order to restore solutions’ uninstall scripts. Without these agent uninstall will fail.

To run a script, simply create a Unix Script task on NS and Copy/Paste the content of the repair_script.sh file there.

3.     Reinstall of ULM Agent 7.1 SP1 on Mac 10.7 (in case 10.6 Mac with installed agent v. 7.1 SP1 was upgraded to 10.7) is not working. Reinstall can be performed after agent upgrade to HF version or you can use repair_script.sh script (available in the PointFix folder) script to recreate missed files that prevents agent from reinstall.

4.     It is also impossible to uninstall solution plugins. To remove them you must run the repair_script.sh script (available in the PointFix folder) script on affected machines to re-create the necessary files. Before that agent may write errors in aex-nsclt-install.log file during upgrade/reinstall process. This only applies to Mac clients that were upgraded from 10.6 to 10.7 while the NS Agent was installed.
