Best practices for using Backup Exec 2010 R3 Deduplication Option with the Central Admin Server Option or the SAN Shared Storage Option

Best practices include tips and recommendations to help you effectively use the Backup Exec Deduplication Option with the Central Admin Server Option (CASO) or the SAN Shared Storage Option. For more information about the Deduplication Option, see the Backup Exec 2010 Administrator's Guide.

The following best practices apply to using the Deduplication Option with the Central Admin Server Option:

  • Create a deduplication storage folder on managed media servers in a CASO environment.

  • Do not run jobs that use a deduplication storage folder on a central administration server. Instead, assign backup jobs to managed media servers and select the option Restrict backup of the selection list to devices on the following media server or media servers in a pool as a setting for the destination device.

  • Share the deduplication storage folders that are on multiple managed media servers with the media server that is the replication target. This provides the best use of optimized duplication. For example, the main office site that has a managed media server deployment shares the deduplication storage folder with the central administration server at a remote site for disaster recovery purposes.

  • Use the following recommendations for optimal catalog placement:

    • For local LAN deployments, use replicated catalogs.

    • For site-to-site optimized duplication, use distributed catalogs.

  • Do not use media server pools as device targets in standalone backups and in selection lists for policy jobs. This prevents duplicate data from being hosted on multiple managed media servers.

  • Subdivide the Remote Agents for Deduplication among the servers that host the deduplication storage folders to best optimize several managed media servers at a single site. For example, a large site with two managed media servers and 10 Remote Agent for Deduplication deployments should split the Remote Agents evenly between the managed media servers.

  • Limit the sharing of Remote Agents for Deduplication with other media servers that use deduplication storage folders. This prevents duplicate data from being hosted on multiple backup servers.

  • Use policy-based backup job configurations to best use optimized duplication and verification of media sets after a job completes.

  • Verify all backup data.

    Note:

Due to the rehydration of data during the verify process, slow performance over Wide Area Networks can be expected if you use optimized duplication with verify templates.

The following best practices apply to using the Deduplication Option with the SAN Shared Storage Option:

  • Create a deduplication storage folder on the primary server.

  • Create additional deduplication storage folders on secondary servers if you use a SAN-based tape library as a destination for duplicate backup sets. This balances the backup/dulicate load.

  • Subdivide the Remote Agents for Deduplication among the servers that host the deduplication storage folders. This provides the best optimization of several secondary media servers at a single site. For example, a large site with multiple secondary media servers and several Remote Agent for Deduplication deployments should evenly split the Remote Agents for Deduplication between the secondary media servers.

  • Limit the sharing of Remote Agents for Deduplication with other media servers that use deduplication storage folders. This prevents duplicate data from being hosted on multiple backup servers.

  • Use policy-based job configurations to best use optimized duplication and verification of media sets after a job completes.

  • Verify all backup data.

    Note:

Due to the rehydration of data during the verify process, slow performance over Wide Area Networks can be expected if you use optimized duplication with verify templates.

  • To perform optimized duplication between a central administration server and a managed Backup Exec server, the following WAN requirements must be met:
    • Less than one percent packet loss during transmissions
    • Less than 250 milliseconds network latency (round trip)
